“With great power comes great responsibility.” In today’s world, with our growing technological power and the knowledge about its impact, we are considered to be responsible for many instances that not long ago would have been deemed a matter of fate. At the same time, the looming options of, e.g., genome editing or neuroprosthetics, threaten traditional notions of responsibility if no longer the person but the technology involved is deemed to be responsible for a specific behaviour. The growing ethical debate on the expansion of human responsibility, e.g. when it comes to human-machine-interaction, ambient intelligence, or reproductive technologies, thus intertwines with the challenge to formulate an appropriate understanding of the concept of personal responsibility and our respective anthropological self-understanding in today’s technological world. The volume brings together both perspectives and aims at illuminating crucial dimensions of responsibility in light of technological innovation and our self-understanding as responsible beings.
The region of the world-famous meteoric monasteries is hiked on ten routes. Each tour takes about 3 to 4 hours and is attractive at any time of the year. Climbing skills are not required, just good shoes and a little sense of direction. The hikes lead to all six active monasteries, which can be visited, as well as to all other sights such as rock monasteries, monk's prison, dragon's cave or spindle, an extraordinary rock. One tour leads to the neighboring villages beyond the Pinio with a bridge from the Ottoman period and a ruined castro, another to the neighboring valley with a bizarre rock formation and magnificent views. The villages of Kalabaka and Kastraki will also be explored extensively. Geological and historical data as well as overview maps for all tours complete the hiking guide. The mountainous landscape of the Meteora monasteries between Kalabaka and Kastraki is part of the World Cultural Heritage. It is visited by hundreds of thousands of people every year, from far and wide. Most of them climb the mountains to the monasteries by bus or by car. This little book wants to entertain the idea to explore offside the streets, deeply immersing oneself in the orthodox faith, contemplating and paying heed to the small things on the wayside. An ancient tree, majestic storks on a church dome or the ruins of bygone monasteries and hermitages - all these things want to tell us their stories!
