SHADOWS MERELY INDICATE
This selection is a definite progression from Michael’s previous book. The poems and short stories are meticulously placed in chronological order and hence demonstrates how his thought processes are evolving. This unique collection of writing evinces a fertile and agile mind with a myriad of influences. Indeed, the styles and themes are so varied that it indicates a burgeoning protean proclivity. Michael is confident that if the reader takes time to carefully read and assimilate each poem and short story they will invariably derive immense satisfaction. There are some personal revelations (autobiographical fragments); surrealism (dreamscape); there are penned portraits of historical figures; some poems are purely fantasy; poems that explore the unconscious; criticisms of world affairs: the author is a passionate environmentalist and an ardent advocate for world peace. If there was a general theme, he would say the poems examine what it means to be human.
Beyond the Cave
Many of these poems and short stories are autobiographical. The author has lived a rich life with many extra-ordinary experiences, some stranger than fiction. Because he spent a significant period of his life physically inactive, to compensate, he became mentally active. He is exceedingly imaginative; so much of his writing is unique and innovative. He has a wide reading habit: philosophy, psychology, religion, art history, sociology, astronomy etc. These books often generate a seed for an idea which the author utilizes and develops. He feels there is no book like his on the market. He has already published two poetry books and a fantasy novel, and this book is a natural evolution of his writing skills over the last two years. Beyond the Cave is innovatively written utilizing many years of study and reading. There are a diverse range of themes and styles demonstrating a fertile and protean mind. Gorky
Firkin village is totally isolated, yet a mysterious virulent disease manifests. The elders are indecisive, much to the frustration of the intrepid water carrier, Gorky. He takes it upon himself, without official sanction, to go on a quest to seek the fabled healing waters of Sacradia to save the stricken tribe. On his journey he encounters many colourful characters and weird creatures. Each experience serves to ameliorate Gorky and readers will enjoy the progression of his character throughout the book. The characters within Gorky make crucial decisions that shape their lives. The novel is imbued with allegory and satirical observation. There is much humour demonstrated in Michael Nilsen’s latest release, allowing a serious message to be presented in a more palatable way. “I have an inveterate compulsion to vent my thoughts and feelings as a cathartic exercise. Also, I find by writing I am reaching out to other people, to alleviate the potential isolation that exists between us,” comments Michael, on the inspiration behind his writing.

Selected Poems Volume 2 is a brand-new selection of poetry, taken from over 20 years of writing. Some of the poems are personal and revelatory, including poems about angels, nightmares, inspirational dreams, surmounting adversity and meticulously described observations of the world we live in.
