The FBI Laboratory
This investigation concerned allegations of wrongdoing and improper practices within certain sections of the FBI Lab. These involved some of the most significant prosecutions in the recent history of the Dept., including the World Trade Center and OK City bombings. They implicated fundamental aspects of law enforcement: the reliability of the procedures employed to analyze evidence, the integrity of the persons engaging in that analysis, and the trustworthiness of the testimony by FBI Lab. examiners. The invest. lasted more than 18 months and addressed a large number of allegations; most were not substantiated, but some important ones were.
Upper Midwest German Biographical Index
"The purpose of [this index] is to provide access to German-American historical sources which focus on the Upper Midwest. This includes coverage of several states, including Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. It complements the Ohio Valley German Biographical Index and its supplement, which provide coverage of other Midwestern states. Altogether, almost 6000 names are indexed in the UMGBI. This index is arranged alphabetically. The amount of information varies from extensive biographical articles, biographical notices, obituaries, to brief references. [This book] facilitates access to these sources, and provides biographical indexing on a geographical scale to the German element in the area which is nowhere else available. Fat Talk
Women have unintentionally become their own worst enemies through their engagement in "fat talk"--critical dialogue about one's own physical appearance, and "body snarking" or criticism towards other women's bodies. Not only does this harsh judgment pervade our psyches and societies, it also contributes to the glass ceiling in a variety of professions, including politics representing feminist activism. This book reviews and analyzes the origins and effects of fat talk and body snarking, and provides potential solutions that include evidence-based personal therapies and community interventions.
Improving Measurement for Smokestack Emissions
The complex flow conditions inherent in power plant smokestacks make accurate flow measurements challenging, which in turn limits the accuracy of hazardous emissions measurements. While stack composition measurements are assessed daily via comparison to a certified gas standard, the flue gas meter is only calibrated once a year via the flow relative accuracy test audit (RATA). In most cases the flow RATA is performed using an S-type pitot probe whose performance can be adversely affected by the complex flow conditions (i.e., asymmetric velocity profile and swirling flow) typical in stacks.
