Vanished Echoes: A Breaking News Story

Through an ingenious mixture of fiction and dramatized news coverage, "Vanished Echoes" transports readers into an abducting child incident which fires the worst instincts and most profound divisions of modern Britain. So when Lucy Carver, aged ten, vanishes, leaving no trace, the hunt for clues only inflames smouldering bombs around race, immigration and trust in institutions. As the country collapses into tumult, we look through them with a critical lens, which makes evident how human nature at its very worst and best is revealed in moments of crisis. The mass media—a friend and a foe—rallies millions to hope and ultimately breeds disunity. While reason gives way to suspicion, passion ...

Stateswomen

Celebrating the centenary of women legislators’ membership in the Arkansas General Assembly, Stateswomen shines a light on the women who have served as some of the state’s central decision makers. Drawing on documentary research and oral histories, Lindsley Armstrong Smith and Stephen A. Smith present lively, concise biographies for the nearly 150 women legislators who have served in the general assembly to date, chronicling their personal histories, volunteer work and social activism, and legislative victories. In a probing introduction, the authors examine the neglected role of women in Arkansas political history alongside the “long history of resistance to full citizenship rights for women in Arkansas”—demonstrating that political representation is essential for improving opportunities in the wider society. The first comprehensive study dedicated to these trailblazing Arkansas legislators, Stateswomen will surely inspire history buffs, community-minded citizens, and political hopefuls alike.

Secrets Lie Still

Third in a series after Michael’s Secret and No Secrets, Secrets Lie Still follows life at Highfield, an estate on Prince Edward Island beginning in September of 1939. Well aware of the growth of the Nazi war machine in Germany and its threats to the UK, a long-time senior strategist in Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service, Rear Admiral (Ret.) Sir Richard Moncrieff, evacuated his wife and daughter to Highfield from Suffolk, England, in 1938. Sir Richard plans to continue his work from Highfield if German air strikes reach his SIS offices in London. When Germany attacks Poland on September 3, 1939, the world is plunged into war once again. While Sir Richard’s two sons serve the Royal Navy at sea under constant peril of U-boat attacks, the war finds its way to Highfield in a covert attack that threatens the lives of his wife, their expectant daughter, and her husband, Michael Moreland, a SIS operative and Highfield’s original superintendent. Amid all the perils that war brings, secrets still find ways to endanger lives and relationships among Highfield’s denizens and friends. While war menaces from without, some discover that secrets threatening their peace lie within.

In 2016, Star Trek--arguably the most popular science fiction franchise of all time--turned 50. During that time the original series and its various offshoots have created some of the genre's most iconic characters and reiterated a vision of an egalitarian future where humans no longer discriminate against race, gender or sexuality. This collection of new essays provides a timely study of how well Star Trek has lived up to its own ideals of inclusivity and equality, and how well prepared it is to boldly go with everyone into the next half century.

Unearthing the Missions of Spanish Florida

This volume presents new data and interpretations from research at Florida’s Spanish missions, outposts established in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries to strengthen the colonizing empire and convert Indigenous groups to Christianity. In these chapters, archaeologists, historians, and ethnomusicologists draw on the past thirty years of work at sites from St. Augustine to the panhandle. Contributors explore the lived experiences of the Indigenous people, Franciscan friars, and Spanish laypeople who lived in La Florida’s mission communities. In the process, they address missionization, ethnogenesis, settlement, foodways, conflict, and warfare. One study reconstructs the sonic histor...
