This deliberately wide-ranging book addresses issues related to trust, compassion, well-being, grace, dignity and integrity. It explores these within the context of higher education, giving existential and empirical accounts of how these moral duties can be expressed within the academy and why they ought to be. The chapters range from values used in the marketing and management of institutions to their realisation in therapeutic and teacher training spaces. The book opens with a specific introduction which positions the work and outlines the context of duties and obligations at play. This is followed by two distinct but related sections including chapters on theoretical issues, organisationa...

Home Truths

The UK's chronic housing shortage is lowering the quality of life for millions, turning the British dream of home ownership into a cruel nightmare – not least for 'generation rent'. Countless vulnerable families are meanwhile being deprived of access to decent social housing, causing homelessness to spiral. In this searing polemic, Liam Halligan offers radical solutions to the most urgent political issue of our times. Fully updated, with a foreword from former Chancellor Sajid Javid and drawing on extensive interviews with Cabinet ministers, civil servants, leading developers and struggling homebuyers across the country, Home Truths is a no-holds-barred critique of the UK's housing crisis.

The Prevent Duty in Education

The Prevent Duty in Education

This open access book explores the enactment, impact and implications of the Prevent Duty across a range of educational contexts. In July 2015 the UK became the first country to place a specific legal requirement on those working in education to contribute to efforts to ‘prevent people from being drawn into terrorism’. Drawing on extensive research with staff, children and young people, the editors and contributors provide new insight into how this high-profile – and highly contentious – policy has shaped educational practice in Britain today. It will be a valuable resource for researchers, policymakers and others interested in the design, implementation and on-the-ground effects of Prevent or similar programmes internationally that place education at the heart of efforts to prevent or counter violent extremism.

In January 2001 the West Middlesex University Hospital Trust let a PFI contract to a private sector consortium, Bywest. The contract is for 35 years, with an estimated present net value of 125 million. Bywest are required to develop the Trust;'s site at Isleworth, and then to provide ongoing maintenance and facilities services. The report contrasts the PFI deal as contracted against the conventional procurement alternative. It finds that: the deal meets expected local needs; in getting the best available PFI deal the Trust applied common sense and had learnt from earlier experience elsewhere in the NHS; the Trust considered that the unquantifiable benefits of the PFI deal outweighed the disbenefits. The NAO makes further recommendations for those engaged in PFI projects, building on those made in its earlier report on Dartford and Gravesham Hospital (HCP 423, 1998-99, ISBN 0102661995)
