Ostend and James Ensor are inextricably linked. Ensor loved Ostend: the city served as his muse and inexhaustible source of inspiration. He loved it for its crowds, the tempestuous North Sea, the carnival that painted the streets in festive colours each year. The name of the painter Léon Spillaert, twenty years his junior, is also connected with this Queen of Seaside Resorts. His nocturnal rambles through the city and long walks along the beach spurred him to create his best works, dark and suffused with mystery. Although Ensor and Spilliaert were very different as artists, their names are often mentioned in the same breath. In Two Masters of Ostend, the museum aims, above all, to allow the masterworks that are the highlights of its collection to speak for themselves. Exhibition: Mu.Zee, Ostend, Belgium (30.04.2016 - ).

Edouard Léon Théodore Mesens (1903-1971) was a main figure in twentieth-century European art. He was known as the "talisman of surrealism". Like a collage, his artistic vocation comprised various fragments: he was a composer, poet, publisher, photographer, exhibition maker and above all a passionate promoter of art. In the early 1920s E.L.T. Mesens played an active role in the European art scene, becoming friends with Tristan Tzara, Theo van Doesburg, Erik Satie and other artists. He appointed himself one of the driving forces of the surrealist movement. It was Mesens to whom René Magritte owed his international reputation and it was Mesens who introduced surrealism to the U.K. He surrounded himself with artists, including Roland Penrose, Lee Miller, Max Ernst, Kurt Schwitters, André Breton, Yves Tanguy and Man Ray. His life was entirely devoted to imagination and poetry. Discover l'amour fou in 'The Star Alphabet by E.L.T. Mesens.' Exhibition: MuZEE, Oostende, Belgium (06.07.-17.11.2013).

Conversation Piece. Collection Mu. ZEE Ostend. Acquisitions 2007-2012

Conversation Piece' is the second publication on the collection policy of Mu. ZEE, released upon the initiative of Contemporary Art Heritage Flanders (CAHF). It presents an overview of the acquisitions made by Mu. ZEE during the period 2007 to 2012. It examines how the approach to collection building relates to the temporary exhibitions. The publication further explores why the collection policy is, and continues to be, the benchmark in considerations about the museum. Mu. ZEE starts from a dialogue with the artist. "Curating the collection" is a term that identifies the various existing connections between the public collection, the artist and the audience. We need to look at the collection and its history from different points of view, so as to rethink and reposition the collection, time and again. 'Conversation Piece' contains a comprehensive index, an interview with Phillip Van den Bossche on the purchasing policy of the past six years, and focusses on a number of specific acquisitions.
