This well illustrated book is the first comprehensive study of the weaving sector of the Lancashire cotton industry to be published. The focus is on the development of weaving mills against the background of the economic development and organisation of the industry. Hand loom weaving was carried out in domestic premises or small workshops. Early power looms were installed in multi-storey mills combined with spinning, the characteristic form of single storey shed with north-light roof used solely for weaving developing later. The construction, power systems and layout of these mills are considered in detail. The book is based on original research looking at both the mills themselves and documentary sources, including plans and company records.

As a schoolboy the only thing Len Woodgate wanted to do was to join the RAF. He achieved this at the tender age of 16, by becoming a member of the 49th Entry of the RAF Halton Apprenticeship scheme. Then followed a full career in the RAF where he later gained a commission. As well as the UK, he was posted on several overseas tours. He finished his service by taking charge of the Aerospace Museum at Cosford and prepared it to be taken over as part of the Royal Air Force Museum. Now, aged 87, Len Woodgate is a remarkable man who has lived an equally remarkable life. His mind is still as sharp as a razor and his memory is still crystal clear. A Journey Round My Cottage
The instant I saw her I knew. It was love at first sight and that love grew over the years. What began as curiosity "I wonder what those marks are on the beams." became "I have to find out about her history". While some of those musings were rewarded, there were many that I could not fathom. There were only a limited number of years that I was able to go back and find answers, then I came up against a blank.
