Discussions on the global economy focus on the hyper-mobility of capital, the possibility of instantaneous transmission of information and money around the globe, the centrality of information outputs to our economic systems and emphasise the neutralisation of geography and of places. What is ignored, however, is that even the most advanced information industries need a material infrastructure of buildings and work processes, and considerable agglomeration, in order to operate in global markets. Further, the globalisation of economic activity has brought with it not only a vast dispersal of offices and factories, but also a growing importance of central functions to manage and coordinate suc...

As the world grapples with the urgent need for sustainable energy solutions, the limitations of traditional approaches to renewable energy forecasting become increasingly evident. The demand for more accurate predictions in net load forecasting, line loss predictions, and the seamless integration of hybrid solar and battery storage systems is more critical than ever. In response to this challenge, advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques are emerging as a solution, promising to revolutionize the renewable energy landscape. Machine Learning and Computer Vision for Renewable Energy presents a deep exploration of AI modeling, analysis, performance prediction, and control approaches dedi...

Use of Proton-exchange Membrane Fuel Cells in Ground Vehicles

Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) require multiple components to operate properly, and the fuel cell stack—the source of power—is one of the most important components. While the number of enterprises manufacturing and selling fuel cell stacks is increasing globaly year after year, the residual challenges of core components and technologies still need to be resolved in order to keep pace with the development of lithium-ion batteries (i.e., its primary competitor). Additionally, many production and distribution standards are seen as unsettled. These barriers make large-scale commercialization an issue. Use of Proton-exchange Membrane Fuel Cells in Ground Vehicles explores the opportunities and challenges within the PEMFC industry. With the help of expert contributors, a critical overview of fuel cells and the FCEV industry is presented, and core technology, applications, costs, and trends are analyzed. The report concludes a series of recommendations for industry and government stakeholders to promote the development of FCEV industry. Every day approximately three-hundred thousand to four-hundred thousand new malware are registered, many of them being adware and variants of previously known malware. Anti-virus companies and researchers cannot deal with such a deluge of malware – to analyze and build patches. The only way to scale the efforts is to build algorithms to enable machines to analyze malware and classify and cluster them to such a level of granularity that it will enable humans (or machines) to gain critical insights about them and build solutions that are specific enough to detect and thwart existing malware and generic-enough to thwart future variants. Advances in Malware and Data-Driven Network Security com...

Young Men and Masculinities in Japanese Media

This book provides an in-depth investigation of two Japanese men's magazines, ChokiChoki and Men's egg, analysed as representative examples of the genre of Japanese lifestyle magazines for young men. Employing both qualitative and quantitative content analysis, focusing on topics ranging from everyday life activities up to partnerships and sexuality, it examines how these magazines discursively renegotiate norms of Japanese masculinity. By scrutinizing the way these magazines convey ideas of gendered behavior within different contexts, the book demonstrates how Japanese lifestyle magazines discursively create new ideas of gender and masculinities in particular. It argues that hegemonic gende...

The Cyber Deterrence Problem

The national security of the United States depends on a secure, reliable and resilient cyberspace. The inclusion of digital systems into every aspect of US national security has been underway since World War II and has increased with the proliferation of Internet-enabled devices. There is an increasing need to develop a robust deterrence framework within which the United States and its allies can dissuade would-be adversaries from engaging in various cyber activities. Yet despite a desire to deter adversaries, the problems associated with dissuasion remain complex, multifaceted, poorly understood and imprecisely specified. Challenges, including credibility, attribution, escalation and confli...
