The A to Z of the Hong Kong SAR and the Macao SAR

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China is located on the southeastern coast of China, and the Macao SAR can be found off of China's southern coast. Both regions have recently been released from European colonial rule: Hong Kong from British control in 1997 and Macao from Portugal in 1999. As SARs, Hong Kong and Macao retain a high degree of autonomy, and they control all issues except those of state (e.g. diplomatic relations and national defense). The A to Z of the Hong Kong SAR and the Macao SAR includes maps, photographs, a list of acronyms, a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on important persons, places, and events as well as political, economic and social background. However, unlike the rest of the series, all these sections are presented in duplicate: one for Hong Kong and one for Macao. The authoritative analysis and informative data presented clearly elucidate the unique situation of these two territories.

Reimagining the Transatlantic, 1780-1890

Proposing the pan-Atlantic as a critical model that extends the geographical and linguistic boundaries of transatlantic and circumatlantic scholarship, Almeida uncovers the shared cultural discourses that connects discourses of discovery, conquest, enslavement and liberation. Her analysis of works by, among others, William Robertson, Ottobah Cugoano, José Blanco White, Juan Manzano and Charles Darwin expands our understanding of Romantic and Victorian Britain's relationship with Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Making of Modern Portugal

This book can be read in two different ways: as an introductory synthesis on Modern Portugal, or as a collection of twelve studies focusing on familiar aspects of the State formation of any modern nation throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In this second reading, each chapter opens comparative perspectives on specific topics within some key fields of studies and international debates on modernity, including population, police, empire, technology, bureaucracy, social sciences, rural life, education, religion, nationalism, communism, and economy. Such a wide range of subjects, however, proves comprehensive enough to create a narrative where the reader may also locate the chief t...

Perspectives on Contemporary Musical Practices

This volume sheds light on the wide range of perspectives on musical activity today, and shows how it can be analyzed from different points of view, working within a diverse theoretical framework. It is organized into three sections, the first of which discusses the changing contexts of musical work compositions over the 20th century. The second part offers a rich and in-depth musical analysis, rigorously connected to the performative and interpretative dimension, while the third considers the relationship between technology and music, and its influence on the creation of new paradigms for musical performance and creation. Covering practical and theoretical problems, the collection will be of great interest to scholars, professionals, students of music, composers, and performers.

Company man

This is an engineering book. However, it is a kind of engineering that is not well known by the general public: namely Applied Petroleum Engineering. It reflects our expertise in offshore well construction and the advanced know-how we achieved in Brazil, a long time before the euphoria caused by the discovery of the famous Pre-Salt reserves in 2005. We talk about the professionals who, for the most part, work on offshore drilling rigs, internationally known as Company Men. The Company Man’s work is unique, exciting and very important, especially when we see Brazilian creativity strongly contributing to the implementation of various achievements. It is not enough to be the “almighty” sp...

China's engagement in Africa is generally portrayed simply as African countries being exploited for their mineral wealth by a wealthy political and economic superpower. Is this always the case? Certain African countries have been able to use China's involvement in the region to grow their economies and solicit renewed interest from previously disengaged foreign powers by using their relationship with China to bolster their political capital. In this thought provoking and original work Lucy Corkin demonstrates how Angola has been amongst the most successful of African nations in this role. The concept of 'African agency' covers a wide range of different countries with very different capabilities and experiences of engaging with China. In each individual county there are a myriad of actors all with increasingly discernible agencies. Uncovering African Agency; Angola's Management of China's Credit Lines casts a fascinating new light on China's involvement with her largest African trading partner and through this shows how different African states and the governmental actors within them are able to exploit the relationship to their best advantage.

The Global History of Portugal

For thousands of years, Portugal has been the point of arrival and departure for peoples, cultures, languages, ideas, fashions, behaviours, beliefs, institutions and produce. While its miscegenation and global multimodal activity enriched the world in many ways, it also provoked violence, war, suffering and resistance. The Global History of Portugal contains 93 chapters grouped into five parts: Pre-history, Antiquity, Middle Ages, Early Modern period and Modern World. Each chapter begins with an event, interpreted in the light of global history. Each part opens with an introduction, offering a perspective of the period in question. The three Editors, five Scientific Coordinators (João Luís...

Dios no existe
