Corporal Politics

"Corporal Politics documents an exhibition at the MIT List Visual Arts Center featuring the works of eight internationally recognized artists: Louise Bourgeois, Kiki Smith, Rona Pondick, Annette Messager, Robert Gober, David Wojnarowicz, Lilla LoCurto, and William Outcault. The work of these artists showcases a striking, recent artistic phenomenon: the disturbing isolation of body parts, internal organs, and bodily fluids to express the vulnerability of our bodies to physical violence, sexual oppression, and ultimate loss. From a sculpture of glass sperm to images confronting AIDS, the works of art represented here poignantly question ideals of coherent identity and an integrated self in our times."--Back cover.

Artist Anicka Yi's work involves scent, tactility and perishability as a means to reconfigure the epistemological and sensorial terms of a predominantly visual art world. At MIT, Yi has explored MIT's cutting-edge research in designing materials with unique biological properties. Yi is not only interested in materials research, but also in what collaboration between individuals and disciplines might mean in relation to friendship. Drawing upon philosopical and critical writings, Yi explores the political and ethical ramifications of these interactions.

Compiling the work of 15 international artists, this generously illustrated book provides a multi-faceted lens through which to explore ideas of affect and intimacy. Affect is an essentially indefinable, largely non-conscious quality that correlates to the experience of diverse emotional and physiological states. This exciting book examines the idea of affect in art. Drawing from an international cadre of contemporary artists working in a variety of media, this book addresses the question of how bodies are affected by intimate relationships with and through objects. The book investigates the kinds of intimate relationships we form with art; explores how art acts as a vehicle for affective engagement or transactions of desire; what role gender plays in affect; and how we experience this force in works of art.

Before Projection

Before Projection: Video Sculpture 1974-1995 shines a spotlight on a historical moment and a body of work in the history of media art that has been largely overlooked since its inception. The exhibition explores the connections between our current moment and the point at which video art was transformed dramatically with the entry of large-scale, cinematic installation into the gallery space. This exhibition will present a re-evaluation of monitor-based sculpture since the 1970’s and serve as a tightly focused survey of works that have been rarely seen in the last twenty years. Artists featured in the exhibition are Dara Birnbaum, Ernst Caramelle, Takahiko Iimura, Shigeko Kubota, Mary Lucier, Muntadas, Tony Oursler, Nam June Paik, Friederike Pezold, Adrian Piper, Diana Thater, and Maria Vedder.--Gallery website.

"'Joan Jonas: They Come to Us without a Word' documents Jonas's project for the United States Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale, an expansive installation that incrporates multiple components, included projected videos, drawings, and objects. Each section of the pavilion represents a particular creature (bees, fish), object (mirror), force (wind), or place (homeroom). Recited fragments of ghost stories sourced from the oral tradition of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, form a continuous narrative linking one room to the next. As Jonas says, 'We are haunted, the rooms are haunted.' Designed with Jonas's close collaboration, this fully illustrated book features an extensive collection of images selected by the artist, including stills, drawings, and photographs, that not only document this ambitious and important new work but form an integral part of the presentation and experience of 'They Come to Us without a Word'. Also included are Jonas's poetic notes on her process and major new texts from ann Reynolds and Marina Warner as well as an interview with the artist by Ingrid Schaffner." -- Publisher.

Colored People Time

  • Categories: Art

Artworks, essays and poetry explore the racial implications of capitalist temporalities In 2019, the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania presented the experimental exhibition Colored People Time. Divided into three chapters--Mundane Futures, Quotidian Pasts, Banal Presents--it used the Black vernacular phrase "Colored People's Time" (CPT) to explore the ways that dominant notions of time have been used to control and condemn Black people. CPT names a political performance by Black people to evade and ridicule the enforcement of punctuality and productivity. Alongside reproductions of historical objects from the Black Panther Party, Sutton E. Griggs, the National I...

Experience

  • Categories: Art

A book that produces sensory experiences while bringing the concept of experience itself into relief as a subject of criticism and an object of contemplation. Experience offers a reading experience like no other. A heat-sensitive cover by Olafur Eliasson reveals words, colors, and a drawing when touched by human hands. Endpapers designed by Carsten Höller are printed in ink containing carefully calibrated quantities of the synthesized human pheromones estratetraenol and androstadienone, evoking the suggestibility of human desire. The margins and edges of the book are designed by Tauba Auerbach in complementary colors that create a dynamically shifting effect when the book is shifted or clos...

"Rosa Barba works with the basic elements of the cinema: celluloid, light, projector, and sound. She dissects the structure of the narrative and plays with the often improbable characters, places, and stories of the medium of film. Her exploration of space, time, and language is crucial to the process. This publication presents her new project, which, like a story or a play in different acts, stretches out across two exhibition chapters. The project revolves around a 35mm film, Time as Perspective, which Barba shot during the spring in Texas--fascinated by the desert landscape, which she approaches from an almost archaeological perspective on a quest for inscribed signs and times." --Publisher description.
