Phenotropic Interaction
Successful interaction between humans and artificial systems allows for combining the advantages of all actors in solving problems. However, interaction is often demanding for people, as it builds on artificial concepts, such as strict protocols. This book presents the new paradigm of 'phenotropic' interaction, which aims to improve the naturalness of the interaction thanks to bio-inspired approaches. These include methods for understanding and reasoning with human perceptions expressed as natural language, fundamental to support the artificial system to better understand people's real desires and needs. Methods for improving the theories of computing with words and perceptions are developed in this book and applied to concrete use cases in prototypes enhancing the exchange of information with virtual assistants and smart city ecosystems. The presented use cases serve not only as examples of the application of the phenotropic interaction principles but also to verify their effective impact on communication.
Soft Computing for Biomedical Applications and Related Topics
This book presents innovative intelligent techniques, with an emphasis on their biomedical applications. Although many medical doctors are willing to share their knowledge – e.g. by incorporating it in computer-based advisory systems that can benefit other doctors – this knowledge is often expressed using imprecise (fuzzy) words from natural language such as “small,” which are difficult for computers to process. Accordingly, we need fuzzy techniques to handle such words. It is also desirable to extract general recommendations from the records of medical doctors’ decisions – by using machine learning techniques such as neural networks. The book describes state-of-the-art fuzzy, neural, and other techniques, especially those that are now being used, or potentially could be used, in biomedical applications. Accordingly, it will benefit all researchers and students interested in the latest developments, as well as practitioners who want to learn about new techniques.

Kenyan Khat

Lucia Moholy (1894-1989)
Photographer, writer and intellectual, Lucia Moholy (born Lucia Schulz, Karolinenthal, Prague, 1894 - Zollikon, Zurich, 1989) is a central figure in the 20th century history of photography, although the fame of her husband, the renowned artist László Moholy-Nagy, overshadowed her work for a long time. Through her photographs, an example of the German avant-garde and of the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity), it is possible to understand the complexity of her artistic personality and to reconstruct the role she played in the cultural history of the past century. Her major photographic work is on the Bauhaus: pictures of the school, of teachers, objects and furniture are considered as true icons of modern times.
