A history of the Tiszaeszlár legal affair. In April 1882 a 14-year-old peasant girl from the village Tiszaeszlár, named Esther Solymosi, disappeared. The authorities arrested a number of Jews and accused them of ritual murder. Three Jewish newcomers to Tiszaeszlár, looking for the position of a ritual slaughterer, were accused of the alleged murder, and 69 other Jews were detained as accomplices. The "confession" on the details of the murder were extracted from Moritz Schwartz, the young son of the synagogue beadle. The Hungarian nobleman and writer Károly (Karl) Eötvös was appointed advocate for the accused Jews. He demanded an autopsy of Esther Solymosi and demonstrated that a ritual murder had not taken place: the girl obviously committed suicide after being maltreated by her employer. The defendants were freed. The investigation had been carried out in an antisemitic atmosphere and with violations of the law. The acquittal of the defendants caused antisemitic outbursts in Budapest and other places.
