Jan Rubes has been a leading performer and director on film, stage, radio and TV and has a varied interest. He emigrated to Canada from Czechoslovakia in 1949 and was soon a leading bass in the Canadian Opera Company. He has performed throughout Canada and the US in countless solo recitals and appearances with symphony orchestras. With his wife, he developed Young People's Theatre in Toronto. A member of the Order of Canada, he holds two doctorates and has been both a national tennis champion as well as an important part of the history of performing arts in Canada.
