A Journey Into History
Hungarian literature is far from having reached the attention and appreciation of the English speaking reader. Our series of essays proposes an «introduction» to rather than a «reappraisal» of this literature which, though unknown, deserves an honorable place among other literatures of the world. Its roots go back to the sources which have been feeding Western art: Christianity and Humanism. Now, if all the other national literatures participate in the universal concert of arts, literature of Hungary, too, would like to make its voice heard, its beauty known. What fascinates the Hungarian writer is not «psychology» or «destiny»; it is history which inspires him courage and perseverance in fighting for the survival of his nation. His authentic poetry saves his artistry from becoming «chauvinistic». On reading these essays, one will enjoy learning how the Hungarians feel about being placed in this narrow corridor of Europe, between East and West, where they witness history in its making.

Early modern Europe was obsessed with borders and travel. It found, imagined and manufactured new borders for its travellers to cross. It celebrated and feared borders as places or states where meanings were charged and changed. Mis-reading the Creative Impulse
Building on work by Aristotle, Jacques Lacan, and Harold Bloom, Adrianna M. Paliyenko s richly textured study revises our previous understanding of Arthur Rimbaud s (18541891) indirect artistic influence on Paul Claudel (18681955). Paliyenko s analysis answers to critical readings that rely on speculative spiritual affinities and text-surface similarities in identifying Claudel as Rimbaud s artistic follower. She traces the two writers development of the poetic subject, striving to map Claudel s "creative corrections," or revisions, of Rimbaud s work. In redirecting discussion of Rimbaud s work, she develops a Bloomian paradigm of how creative artists strive for originality by correcting or revising their predecessors."

During the 1884 inauguration of the Royal Hungarian Opera House in Budapest, political elites staged a gala concert in the auditorium while the angry crowd, excluded from this ceremony, demonstrated on the street. In 1917, the crowds queuing to a Béla Bartók premiere needed to be forcibly held back. The book follows the history of the contested institution through a series of scandals, public protests, repertoire controversies and their representation in the urban press of the time. Such conflicts often led to larger issues that concerned the Opera House as a music institution, the birth of the modern public sphere and the modern audience. Thereby, the book calls for a critical rethinking of the cultural history of Budapest and Hungary in the late Habsburg Monarchy.
