Ansgar Martins’s The Migration of Metaphysics into the Realm of the Profane is the first book-length study focusing on Adorno’s idiosyncratic appropriation of Jewish mysticism in the light of his relationship to Gershom Scholem and their shared intellectual contexts. Rather than merely posit vague associative connections, as previous authors have often done, Martins’s close reading of specific references in published and private texts alike allows him to highlight both commonalities and differences between Adorno’s and Scholem’s understanding of Kabbalistic tropes and the issue of metaphysics in the modern world, and to demonstrate the extent to which similarities resulted from mutual and/or third-party influences (especially Benjamin). Martins throws the specifics of their respective idiosyncratic appropriations of (Jewish) tradition into sharp relief.
The Kurds before a Regional Transformation
The Kurdish independence movement is in retreat. Contributing factors for this withdrawal are the new outbreak of the Kurdish war in Turkey, the structural weakening of the autonomous region "Rojava" in Syria, proclaimed by the DUP, and the setbacks in Iraqi Kurdistan, caused by political and economic blockades. The Kurdish autonomy projects will be reduced to a minimum. The independence referendum in Iraq and the Iraqi and Shiite militias' military response are indicative of the reluctance of the Middle-Eastern ruling forces to accept political and ethnical pluralism. External actors as the USA, the EU and the UN, support the return of the "strong" state in order to support regional stability. Kurdish elites and their political organisations are facing a crisis of their own. The Kurdistan Workers' Party propagates postmodern concepts of a post-nation state in a region requiring stable political structures more than ever before. In Iraqi Kurdistan ongoing internal fighting between the main actors sets back Nation and State building processes by decades. All these factors are part of a phase of transition aiming at a new regional order, whose outlines can't be anticipated yet.

Chajim H. Steinthal (1823-1899) was one of the most important philosophical linguists and teachers of the āScience of Judaismā. His multilayered and diverse scholarly works sprang from the solid foundation of an exceptionally broad and comprehensive education. Among other things, together with Moritz Lazarus he founded the discipline of Völkerpsychologie (psychology of nations). Steinthal taught mainly at the University of Berlin and the Hochschule (later Lehranstalt) für die Wissenschaft des Judentums. The volume contains the results of an interdisciplinary conference organized by the Leopold Zunz Centre for the Study of European Judaism (LEUCOREA Foundation, Wittenberg), the Synagogue Museum Groebzig and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. It presents papers in the fields of linguistics, philosophy, Jewish studies and history as well as an inventory of Steinthal’s papers in Jerusalem. Rapprochement, Change, Perception and Shaping the Future
The relations between the two states and societies have been rather complex during both the previous half-century and beyond. Embedded in changing political landscapes, the ramifications reach back to the early 19th century. Yet the uniqueness of the relationship network only shows in light of the wholesale murder of Jews in Europe, the creation of the State of Israel, the discussions surrounding the initiation of diplomatic relations and their arrangement until the present day. The development and intensity of the relations with regard to civil society and politics are quite astonishing when considering the beginnings. Approaches, changes and the in part greatly-varying perceptions of the other side can be observed over the course of 50 years of history, and these give rise to questions concerning the current state of the relationship and its future design.
