The Question of Evil in Ancient Egypt
  • Language: en

The Question of Evil in Ancient Egypt

The book examines relevant sources from the Old Kingdom Pyramid Texts (c. 24th century B.C.E.) to the Graeco-Roman Period inscriptions (2nd century C.E.) in order to understand the way the ancient Egyptians tackled the question of the origin of evil in the world. It also investigates whether the world was perfect or imperfect since its beginning. Scholars addressing these questions are generally of two categories: those advocating the pre-existent character of evil and asserting therefore that the world was not perfect since its creation; and those who plead for the contingent nature of evil and thus imply that the world was created perfect at the beginning but was marred afterwards by various protagonists other than the creator. --Book Jacket.

Illuminating Osiris

Illuminating Osiris comprises twenty-seven articles by students, friends, and colleagues in honor of Mark Smith, Professor of Egyptology at the University of Oxford. Smith is especially renowned as a Demoticist and specialist in ancient Egyptian religion. His numerous Demotic text editions and translations of Egyptian funerary and religious compositions have been enormously influential in the field. The contributions in Illuminating Osiris naturally reflect Smith's particular interests in the religion and literature of Graeco-Roman period Egypt, dealing with cult, rituals, astronomy, and divination, among other subjects. The book includes many editions or reeditions of texts written in Demotic, Hieratic, and Ptolemaic Hieroglyphs. It is profusely illustrated and supplied with detailed indices.

Probable, Possible, Plausible

Probable, Possible, Plausible: Explanatory Guide to Monsters and Myth By: Scott Strozier Every story, no matter the subject matter, has a segment of inspirational truth…Unbelievability of a story comes with its intended purpose: The more the story is meant to entertain, the more prone it is to exaggeration and becoming unrealistic.” The Grim Reaper, Medusa, Sasquatch, and chimera all have a foundation built on facts, not fiction. Yet some would readily dismiss the stories of these creatures as the ramblings of our primitive ancestors. Is the unwillingness to see any truth in these tales a sign of a modern superiority complex? Join author Scott Strozier as he delves into the most iconic monsters of pop culture today: dissecting the myths, peeling back the exaggerations, and exposing the shocking truths.
