Perbudakan merupakan peristiwa kelam sejarah; perjalanan panjang kehidupan umat manusia. Sebelum Nabi Muhammad SAW diutus menjadi Rasul, tatanan kehidupan umat manusia di berbagai belahan dunia tidak terlepas dari perbudakan, manusia memperbudak manusia lainnya, terdapat sistem kelas dalam masyarakat, ada kelas majikan (borjuis) dan ada kelas budak (proletar) yang bersifat tetap dan permanen. Menghapus sistem perbudakan bukanlah perkara gampang, karena sudah berakar tunggang dalam kehidupan masyarakat dunia, kekuatan yang mempertahankan lebih besar ketimbang yang menghendaki pembebasannya. Dalam kondisi demikian, Islam hadir, sehingga sepintas Islam seolah mengakui perbudakan, namun secara perlahan-lahan menghapuskannya. Kini dunia sepakat menghapus perbudakan melalui konstitusi negara masing-masing sejak Universal Declaration of Human Rights oleh Majelis Umum PBB tanggal 10 Desember 1948.
