Escaping Poverty Traps and Unlocking Prosperity in the Face of Climate Risk
This Element outlines the origins and evolution of an international award-winning development intervention, index-based livestock insurance (IBLI), which scaled from a small pilot project in Kenya to a design that underpins drought risk management products and policies across Africa. General insights are provided on i) the economics of poverty, risk management, and drylands development; ii) the evolving use of modern remote sensing and data science tools in development; iii) the science of scaling; and iv) the value and challenges of integrating research with operational implementation to tackle development and humanitarian challenges in some of the world's poorest regions. Weather Index Insurance for Smallholder Farmers in Africa
ÿThe international conference on ?Weather index insurance in Africa: lessons learnt and goals for the future? was organised by the Department of Economics, University of the Western Cape, in collaboration with its international partners. The conference attracted over 40 participants drawn from academic and research institutions, insurance practitioners, reinsurers, government policy makers, bankers, agricultural producers, and representatives of non-governmental organisations. The presenters highlighted experiences, challenges and opportunities based on current pilot projects on weather index insurance in many parts of Africa.

Poverty Dynamics
This collection of essays provides a state-of-the-art examination of the concepts and methods that can be used to understand poverty dynamics. It does this from an interdisciplinary perspective and includes the work of anthropologists, economists, sociologists, and political scientists. The contributions included highlight the need to conceptualise poverty from a multidimensional perspective and promote Q-Squared research approaches, or those that combine quantitative and qualitative research. The first part of the book provides a review of the research on poverty dynamics in developing countries. Part two focuses on poverty measurement and assessment, and discusses the most recent work of world-leading poverty analysts. The third part focuses on frameworks for understanding poverty analysis that avoid measurement and instead utilise approaches based on social relations and structural analysis. There is widespread consensus that poverty analysis should focus on poverty dynamics and this book shows how this idea can practically be taken forward.
