Nobson
This summer Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen will exhibit Paul Noble's Nobson Newtown, an ever-growing cosmopolis on which the artist has worked for eighteen years. The vast drawings and other artworks that make up Nobson Newtown are spread across major museums and private collections worldwide, and will be brought together in the museum's 1500m2 Bodon Galleries for the most comprehensive survey of Noble's project to date. Museum Boijmans: Van Beuningen
Joseph Marryat (1757–1824) was an M.P., chairman of Lloyd's and colonial agent for Grenada. This volume contains three of his pamphlets - Thoughts on the Abolition of the Slave Trade (1816), More Thoughts (1816) and More Thoughts Still (1818) which replied to his critics. The first pamphlet was very controversial, running to four editions in the year of publication. It vigorously attacks the policies and influence of the African Institution, whose arguments regarding the operation of slavery since the Abolition Act of 1807 he proves, by using evidence from official British and colonial government reports, to contain many falsehoods. Marryat believed that, with regard to emancipation, lessons must be learned from the French Revolution: ideals, if taken too quickly to extremes, cause national and even international conflict. His critics accused him of equal economy with the truth by selective use of source material: his responses were also best-sellers.
Dutch Art Nouveau and Art Deco Ceramics
The current fascination with early twentieth-century design makes this exploration of Art Deco and Art Nouveau ceramics from the Netherlands both exciting and timely. Encompassing earthenware, porcelain and stoneware products produced between circa 1890 and 1940, the objects presented here range from hand-crafted artisanal works to factory-made vases, bowls, and dinner and tea services. Complementary texts outline the development and history of the vast ceramics collection of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, from which these objects are drawn, and compare ceramics from the Netherlands with those from other European countries and North America. The history of the ceramics factory is discussed alongside the oeuvre of artisan potters. This catalogue is the first in a series devoted to the museum's ceramics collection, which contains a wide time-span of objects from the four corners of the world.
