Hz. Peygamber kendisinin muallim olarak gönderildiğini söylemiş ve ahirete irtihal edinceye kadar etrafındakilere mekân ayrımı yapmaksızın çeşitli vesilelerle ilim öğretmiştir. O, kendisinden kısa bir söz dahi olsa aktarılmasını istemiş, bunu yapanların yüzünün ağarması için Allah'a dua etmiştir. Onun (s.a.v.) bu tavsiyesinin bir sonucu olarak Müslümanlar, başta hadis olmak üzere ilim adına her şeyi sahiplenerek peşine düşmüşlerdir. Hz. Peygamber'e dair ne varsa toplama çabasında olan muhaddisler ise hadislerde yer alan ve bu çabaların arka planını oluşturan ilme dair metinleri bir araya getirmeyi ihmal etmemişlerdir. Bunlar hadis kaynaklarında “Kitâbü'l-İlm” başlığı ile kendisine yer bulmuştur. Böyle bir bab başlığı, Tirmizî'nin Câmi'inde de bulunmaktadır. Hadisle ilgilenenlerin istifadesi açısından söz konusu bölüme dair bazı notların iki kapak arasına girmesinin faydalı olacağı düşünülmüştür.
