“Dünyaya gözümü açtığımdan beri muharebe, hep muharebe, arkası kesilmez muharebenin. Abe niçin girsin kara toprağa onca ana baba kuzucukları, gençliklerine doyamadan, ha?” Annemin elinden mektubu kaptı. Dayım kâğıdın dörtgeni içindeymiş gibi ona seslendi: “Anacığın umudunu kesmemiştir Mustafa’m! Gece gündüz ettiğim duaların yüzü suyu hürmetine Tanrım seni koruyacaktır. Hiç merak etme!” Zühre Ninem, “Büyük Bozgun” diye anılan 1877-1878 Osmanlı-Rus Savaşı’yla başlayan, Balkan ve Birinci Dünya savaşlarıyla süren ve Kurtuluş Savaşı’yla sonuçlanan çalkantılı bir dönemde hayatları parçalanan Rumeli insanlarını anlatıyor. Büyük Bozgun, Zühre Nine’yi doğduğu Vraça’dan Köprülü’ye sürüklemiştir. Bu sürükleniş, devam eden savaşlarla birlikte daralan Osmanlı coğrafyasında oradan oraya, Anadolu içlerine kadar devam eder.
Winner of the 2012 Naguib Mahfouz Medal, this novel is set in an idyllic Egyptian village from the time it was discovered by Muhammad Ali's mission in the early nineteenth century to the 2003 US invasion of Iraq, movingly intertwining events on the world scene with the life dramas of its protagonists. The story opens with the pivotal character, Mubarka Badr, now a grandmother and matriarch, wanting to dictate a letter to God for her grandson to send to the Almighty by email. We are then ushered back in time to Mubarka's fiery adolescence and her painfully aborted romance with Muntasir, son of the village's deceased but legendary strongman. The shifting fortunes of the Deeb clan affect every aspect of its members' lives, from their sexual vulnerabilities to the grief of loss, the uncertainties of a changing world, and the heartaches borne of betrayal and love unfulfilled.

‘Just downright brilliant... a transcendent, transporting experience’ Observer A motherless girl grows up in isolated luxury, hidden from the world by her wealthy father. She believes their life together is normal – but as time passes, she has a growing sense that something between them is very wrong. She cannot escape, so she seeks solace in her books. Her favourite tales are those that conjure ancient worlds – of angry gods and heroic mortals, one of whom will some day come to her rescue. Soon, she will forget where the page ends and her mind begins. ‘A full-throttle blast of storytelling mastery’ Max Porter
This is meant to be the 10th volume of the series Medicinal and Aromatic Plants of the World. Similarly, to the previous volumes, the work will deal -in a monographic form- with MAPs characteristic/famous or simply known of Turkey, a large country that is connecting Europe with Asia. Turkey has extremely rich and varied topographic/ecologic conditions. As a result, the flora of Turkey abounds in an astonishingly great number of endemic MAP species. Traditional, present and possible prospective uses will be discussed. Scientific and technological achievements will be equally presented. Briefly, the volume is aimed to look carefully at our present knowledge of this vast interdisciplinary domain of medicinal and aromatic plants with a focus on Turkey. In the era of global climate change and Covid-pandemics, building on the huge Turkish traditions, the proposed volume of the series is expected to make an important contribution to the better knowledge and understanding of the MAP wealth of the World.
