Whilst the legal use of cannabis, cocaine and opiates has been strictly confined to medical and scientific circles, supposedly less harmful drugs, such as tobacco and alcohol, have been widely consumed for several centuries. The physiopathology of these drugs has been well documented in those industrialised countries with developed health care systems but, in contrast, a physiopathology of cannabis, cocaine and opiates has only recently emerged, as chronic drug abuse becomes a common feature of life in those same countries. These proceedings document the First International Symposium devoted to this subject, during which clinical descriptions of the physiopathology of cannabis, cocaine and opiates were associated with experimental studies, thus enabling specialists and doctors to approach the prevention and rehabilitation of drug dependence more effectively.
