Dimensionale Vergleiche als Mechanismus zur Selbstaufwertung
Tobias Baumann befasst sich mit den Motiven, die Menschen dazu veranlassen, dimensionale Vergleiche durchzuführen. Sein Fokus liegt dabei auf dem Selbstaufwertungsmotiv, welches die Tendenz bezeichnet, das Selbst in einem möglichst positiven Licht zu sehen. Anhand von drei empirischen Studien zeigt er auf, dass Menschen in Situationen mit negativer affektiver Valenz vermehrt Aufwärtsvergleiche durchführen und dass diese zu einer Aufwertung des Selbst führen. Die Arbeit stellt eine Synthese aus pädagogisch-psychologischer und sozialpsychologischer Forschung dar und demonstriert, dass dimensionale Vergleiche eine hohe affektive Relevanz aufweisen und mehr als nur „kalte Kognition“ darstellen.
