Dunellen
If the Elizabethtown & Somerville Railroad had not laid tracks through the area in 1840, Dunellen would not exist today. In 1867, the Central New Jersey Land Improvement Company founded Dunellen from a small slice of Piscataway. Their vision was to create a bedroom community for New York City that offered stores and services to support residents; in 1887, Dunellen was incorporated as a borough. Called the "Emerald of the Plain," Dunellen was promoted as a resort with stagecoaches taking tourists from the Railroad Depot to Washington Rock and other resort locations several times a day. By the turn of the century, Dunellen had become an industrialized community with companies specializing in steel fabrication, printing, and brick and concrete block production. Through vintage images, Dunellen chronicles the evolution of the community from its early history to today, coming full circle as a bedroom community known as "The Railroad Town."
TRUTH FOR HUMAN EXISTENCE AND HAPPINESS
This book is a response to postmodernists who take the position that there is no foundation for truth; there are only stories. We posit two types of truth, truth about existence created by scientists, which serves as a foundation of truth for existence. Truth about existence describes human nature, a major component being the human sense of self. Following George Herbert Mead, the self is not an entity, it is process. It is not substantative; it is functional. There are two phases to the self, the “I” phase and the “Me”-phase. The “I”- phase has its roots in biology, so when the needs of the self are not being gratified, individuals suffer. When individuals suffer, life is without meaning; individuals despair. It is human needs and their inherent tie to suffering that points the way to truth for human existence and happiness. Because other people value what they need, needs and their corresponding values serve as the foundation for truth about existence upon which truth for human existence is constructed.
Revolution and Revolutionaries
Few publications cover the full span of the history of revolutionary movements in Latin America. In Revolution and Revolutionaries, editor Daniel Castro examines all aspects of guerrilla warfare-from revolutionary programs to the repressive tactics used by various governments to rid themselves of the threats presented by revolutionary movements. In addition to illustrating specific cases of guerrilla struggles, Revolution and Revolutionaries also analyzes the political and social conditions that made the outbreak of revolutionary movements throughout the region unavoidable. Finally, Castro examines the remaining guerrilla movements still active in Latin America as the century comes to a close. In 1954 the U.S. Air Force launched an ambitious program known as WS-117L to develop the world's first reconnaissance satellite. The goal was to take photographic images from space and relay them back to Earth via radio.
