Evaluation of FAO/USAID Emerging Pandemic Threats Programme Phase II (EPT-2)

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has been involved in the Emerging Pandemic Threats Programme (EPT-2), funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) since 2014. The programme sets out to minimize the impact of existing global pandemic threats and to detect, respond to and improve the prevention of emerging threats. Implementation of this programme at FAO has been carried out through 20 projects with efforts concentrated in 36 countries in Africa and Asia. It builds upon lessons learned in the first phase of the programme, in which FAO was involved in improving livestock disease surveillance, enhancing capacity of veterinary epidemio...

Determining key research areas for healthier diets and sustainable food systems in Viet Nam

Vietnamese food systems are undergoing rapid transformation, with important implications for human and environmental health and economic development. Poverty has decreased, and diet quality and undernutrition have improved significantly since the end of the Doi Moi reform period (1986-1993) as a result of Viet Nam opening its economy and increasing its regional and global trade. Yet poor diet quality is still contributing the triple burden of malnutrition, with 25 percent stunting among children under age 5, 26 percent and 29 percent of women and children, respectively, anemic, and 21 percent of adults overweight. Agricultural production systems have shifted from predominantly diverse smallh...

Food Safety in Low and Middle Income Countries

Food Safety in Low and Middle Income Countries

Foodborne diseases (FBD) are an important externality of agriculture and food systems, but only recently have they risen up the development agenda as the result of growing awareness of the health and economic burdens of FBD and how they relate to food systems with a focus on low-income and middle-income countries (LMIC), particularly African nations. The health burden of FBD is comparable with that of malaria, and over 90% falls on people in LMIC, with an economic burden of more than US$100 million per year. FBD have many other, less well-estimated effects on nutrition, gender, equity, and the environment. While understanding of food safety in domestic markets of LMICs has advanced greatly, risk management is in its infancy. This Research Topic will bring together leading regional perspectives on food safety in LMICs.
