The Organs and Organists of Chichester Cathedral
The book details the history of three organs, and provides a complete account of the organists, warts and all. Chichester has had its quota of eccentrics, but, equally, its record of distinguished musicians is evident. No matter how good the instrument, its sensitive and liturgical use depends on the organistâe(tm)s understanding of the role of the music within worship.
A History of the Organs in St Paul's Cathedral
Beginning with the Father Smith organ of 1694, the organs in the famous London cathedral are traced through enlargement and rebuildings of the Smith organ, through the Willis organ of 1872 and 1930, to the current Mander organ of 225 ranks which comprises much of its predecessors. Also covered are other organs in the Cathedral and even some information about the previous cathedral building, destroyed in the London fire of 1666.
The Letters of Samuel Wesley
Samuel Wesley (1766-1837) was the son of the hymn-writer Charles Wesley and the nephew of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. He was one of the leading composers in late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century England, and the finest organist of his day. He was also a misfit and a rebel, renowned for his outspoken views, his frequently wild behavior, and his irregular personal life. His music has become increasingly well known in recent years, and these letters to his friends and fellow musicians, over 400 of which are gathered together here for the first time, present both a witty, perceptive, and unparalleled portrait of Wesley the man, and an insiders view of life in the music profession in London in the early nineteenth-century.
The Music Treatises of Thomas Ravenscroft
Thomas Ravenscroft is best-known as a composer of rounds owing to his three published collections: Pammelia and Deuteromelia (both 1609), and Melismata (1611), in addition to his harmonizations of the Whole Booke of Psalmes (1621) and his original sacred works. A theorist as well as a composer and editor, Ravenscroft wrote two treatises on music theory: the well-known A Briefe Discourse (1614), and 'A Treatise of Practicall Musicke' (c.1607), which remains in manuscript. This is the first book to bring together both theoretical works by this important Jacobean musician and to provide critical studies and transcriptions of these treatises. A Briefe Discourse furthermore introduces an anthology of music by Ravenscroft, John Bennet, and Ravenscroft's mentor, Edward Pearce, illustrating some of the precepts in the treatise. The critical discussion provided by Duffin will help explain Ravenscroft's complicated consideration of mensuration, in particular.
