Aston Martin Ulster
CMC 614 is the registration number of an historic Aston Martin Ulster which has, without doubt, competed in more races than any other Aston. Built in 1935 to the same specification as the factory team cars, it took part in the Le Mans 24 Hour race, the Mille Miglia, and the Tourist Trophy in 1935. Eddie Hall and Count Johnny Lurani were among the celebrated drivers who raced it in its first season. The 1.5 litre Ulster model marked the peak of Aston's pre-war achievements and marque enthusiasts recognize CMC 614 as one of the finest examples of the 28 made – as well as the most raced Aston of all time.
Ultimate Works Porsche 956
Unleashed in 1982, the Porsche 956 became the most successful purpose-built race car in history. Over the following decade, the 956 and its later long-wheelbase version, the 962, would win five consecutive world championships, as well as every single classic sportscar race in the world a record number of times: the Le Mans 24 Hours seven times, the Daytona 24 Hours six times and the Sebring 12 Hours four times, plus 39 world championship events and 55 IMSA races, to name but a few of its remarkable achievements. Many of the successes were achieved by works-entered cars, almost always in the iconic white-and-blue colours of sponsor Rothmans, and they form the focus of an extraordinary body of work researched and written by author Serge Vanbockryck over the past 30 years. This is the first part of his project, a two-volume production about the Works 956s, with a second such title on the Works 962s to follow in the summer of 2020.
Alfa Romeo Monza
This book tells the remarkable history of an Alfa Romeo Monza and its characterful drivers and owners, some with life stories worthy of a movie script. Built in 1933, ‘221130’ was raced that year by the Hon. Brian Lewis and won its debut at Brooklands and the arduous Mannin Moar race on the Isle of Man. The car continued to be raced until the war by John Cobb (1934) who later was a land speed record holder, Luis Fontes (1935) who was also an aeroplane racer, Anthony Powys-Lybbe (1936–37) and Fay Taylour (1938) who was interned during the Second World War for her Fascist links, at venues as diverse as Vila Real (Portugal) and Phoenix Park (Ireland). Post-war, a succession of notable owners included Peter Hampton, the Hon. Patrick Lindsay and Hubert Fabri, all passionate collectors, to arrive at its status today as one of the more important surviving Monzas, and a car with so much charisma and historic interest that it is a most worthy addition to the acclaimed ‘Great Cars’ series
