This report describes an action-learning project led by the Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI) that strengthened the capacity of national and regional institutions to assess the potential of economic instruments to improve the quality and delivery of watershed services in the Caribbean. It focuses on project sites and case studies in Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Grenada, Trinidad and Tobago, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, while drawing on lessons of wider regional and international interest.

In this book, James Fairhead and Melissa Leach bring science to the heart of debates about globalisation, exploring transformations in global science and contrasting effects in Guinea, one of the world's poorest countries, and Trinidad, a more prosperous, industrialised and urbanised island. The book focuses on environment, forestry and conservation sciences that are central to these countries and involve resources that many depend upon for their livelihoods. It examines the relationships between policies, bureaucracies and particular types of scientific enquiry and explores how ordinary people, the media and educational practices engage with this. In particular it shows how science becomes part of struggles over power, resources and legitimacy. The authors take a unique ethnographic perspective, linking approaches in anthropology, development and science studies. They address critically prominent debates in each, and explore opportunities for new forms of participation, public engagement and transformation in the social relations of science.
COVID in the Islands: A comparative perspective on the Caribbean and the Pacific
This book provides the first wide-ranging account of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in two contrasting island regions - the Caribbean and the Pacific - and in several islands and island states. It traces the complexity of effects and responses, at different scales, through the first critical year. Written by a range of scholars and practitioners working in the region the book focuses on six key themes: public health; the economies (notably the collapse of tourism, the revival of local agriculture and fishing, and the rebirth of self-reliance, and even barter); the rescue by remittances; social tensions and responses; public policy; and future ‘bubbles’ and regional connections. Even with marine borders that excluded the virus all island states were affected by COVID-19 because of a considerable dependence on tourism – prompting urgent challenges for governance, economic management and development, as small states sought to balance lives against livelihoods in search of revitalisation or even a ‘new normal’.

Many people investigating the operation of large-scale environmentalist organizations see signs of power, knowledge and governance in their policies and projects. This collection indicates that such an analysis appears to be justified from one perspective, but not from another. The chapters in this collection show that the critics, concerned with the power of these organizations to impose their policies in different parts of the world, appear justified when we look at environmentalist visions and at organizational policies and programs. However, they are much less justified when we look at the practical operation of such organizations and their ability to generate and carry out projects intended to reshape the world.

Breakthrough Problem Solving with Action Learning explores why and how action learning groups have been so successful and creative in solving complex problems. The text begins by briefly reviewing the theories that undergird the effectiveness of action learning, philosophically situating readers and pointing them in the direction of related academic works that they may wish to explore. It then turns to stories of how organizations have employed action learning in solving specific, often-encountered business problems. These cases not only serve as real-world models for how action learning can be successfully employed, but also offer inspiration and potential starting points and guidelines for other businesses that face similar problems. The book concludes with a cross-case analysis that pinpoints the ingredients necessary for breakthrough problem solving via action learning.

Caribbean Strategy for Climate-Resilient Forests and Rural Livelihoods
The Caribbean Strategy for Climate-Resilient Forests and Rural Livelihoods matches prioritised forestry initiatives for vertical and horizontal scaling with suitable funding streams. It also identifies possible regional and national partners for project development and execution. While the strategy is focused on forest resources management, it also emphasises poverty alleviation and food security in line with FAO’s Strategic Objectives. The strategy also has a gender and youth focus in addition to an emphasis on ecosystem services to support agricultural systems. Overall, the strategy can be thought of as a roadmap to mobilise investment for specific priority initiatives for vertical and horizontal scaling of climate resilience actions in the Caribbean forestry sector.
