Este libro reúne dos trabajos guiados por una preocupación compartida: iluminar el lugar que ocuparon los hombres y mujeres afro descendientes en los discursos, los imaginarios raciales y las letras del siglo XIX colombiano. El trabajo de María Camila Nieto, centrado en las décadas pos esclavistas, analiza las imágenes de esclavos y negros libres construidas en la novela fundacional María y en los textos publicados por autores colombianos en el Museo de Cuadros de Costumbres de El Mosaico. El trabajo de María Riaño, centrado en un marco temporal más amplio, estudia la representación de los bogas del río Magdalena en una diversidad de relatos, ensayos y diarios de viaje escritos por intelectuales nacionales y extranjeros a lo largo de todo el siglo XIX. Por medio de dos análisis rigurosos y un diálogo constante entre historia y literatura, las autoras nos invitan a reflexionar en torno a las relaciones de poder, las inclusiones, exclusiones, tensiones y resistencias que se escondieron en las plumas de los letrados, detrás de las representaciones del esclavo "sumiso", la esclava maternal, el manumiso "irreverente" o el boga .
