Palynology and Vegetation History
This Research Topic commemorates the centenary of the first quantitative pollen diagram by Lennart von Post, the founder of paleoecological palynology. The main aim is to provide a thorough view of the use of palynology in aspects such as the reconstruction of Quaternary vegetation and environmental changes, the role of natural and anthropogenic drivers in the development of the Quaternary vegetation, the shaping of present-day ecological and biogeographical patterns, the potential application of this knowledge in biodiversity conservation and landscape restoration and the development of new methods of pollen analysis and data management. The Research Topic is subdivided into four main conceptual parts, namely (1) modern analog studies; (2) land cover estimates from pollen data; (3) vegetation dynamics reconstructions from Europe, North and South America, Africa and Oceania; and (4) large-scale reviews and meta-analyses. Hopefully, this Research Topic will serve to appraise the state of the art of modern palynology and highlight the usefulness of this discipline in long-term ecological research.
Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution 2020 Highlights
If nothing else, 2020 reminded us that, whether we like it or not, human society forms part of a broader ecological community that includes species with management challenges. My experience in Melbourne highlighted how environmental threats to humanity are best managed when governments adopt evidence-based strategies (that might also require incentives for human cooperation). Fundamental research, ranging from quantitative natural history to broader insights about ecological and evolutionary processes, invariably forms the backbone of such evidence. Words in Dictionaries and History
Bringing together fifteen articles by scholars in Europe and North America, this collection aims to represent and advance studies in historical lexis. It highlights the significance of the understanding of dictionary-making and language-making as important socio-cultural phenomena. With its general focus on England and English, the book investigates the reception and development of historical and modern English vocabulary and culture in different periods, social and professional strata, geographical varieties of English, and other national cultures. The volume is based on individual (meta)lexicographical, etymological, lexicosemantic and corpus studies, representing two large areas of research: the first part focuses on the history of dictionaries, analysing them in diachrony from the first professional dictionaries of the Baroque period via Enlightenment and Romanticism to exploring the possibilities of the new online lexicographical publications; and the second part looks at the interfaces between etymology, semantic development and word-formation on the one hand, and changes in society and culture on the other.

Lying on the border between eastern and western Christendom, Orthodox Karelia preserved its unique religious culture into the 19th and 20th centuries, when it was described and recorded by Finnish and Karelian folklore collectors. Apart from his career in design and marketing, he is also known for his own champagne brand and multiple competition victories in breakdance with a group called Moonfreeze he founded in 1998. Ansver opened his first studio and gallery on Iso Roobertinkatu in Helsinki in 2006. He has worked as a designer for dozens of international companies and has left a legacy of hundreds of personally crafted quality logos. Along with logos, he has designed complete visual looks for many brands and designed products, flavours, clothing lines and shoes. He is an accomplished artist in his own right.
