The book discusses how myth binaries, memory layers and identity markers shaped artists professional lives in an interwoven and fluid approach following German unification, taking a fresh look at the intricacies of visual artists’ careers within the specifics of the cultural, social and political changes. It surveys artists’ professional practice and work under the new framework of the professional class, and discusses the implications for the profession of artists with special reference to visual artists. State of the Arts

Tinius shows how anthropological methods provide a way to understand the entanglement of cultural policy, institution-building, and subject-formation. Heimat and Migration
Discourses of Heimat and of migration both negotiate questions of identity, belonging, and integration; moreover, despite the reemergence of right-wing, racist, and exclusionary uses of the term Heimat, there are in fact more recent German-language cultural texts that problematize and challenge a view of Heimat as a community that excludes the Other than there are promulgating it. This volume addresses the parallel proliferation of discourses of Heimat and of migration in contemporary German-language culture and demonstrates that the entanglement of migration and Heimat can be productive: it can help us to reframe what it means to have a home, to lose one, find one, or belong to one.

Kulturpolitik
Kulturpolitik hat in den letzten Jahrzehnten ständig an Bedeutung gewonnen. Wie aber funktioniert sie, unter welchen Rahmenbedingungen findet sie statt? Das Buch klärt zunächst die Grundbegriffe: Welche Konzepte von Kultur werden im Zusammenhang der Kulturpolitik diskutiert, was wird unter Kultur, was unter Politik, was schließlich unter Kulturpolitik verstanden? Kulturpolitik findet stets unter spezifischen historischen, juristischen und finanziellen Rahmenbedingungen statt, und diese geben ihr eine spezifische Ausprägung. Die Akteure der Kulturpolitik handeln auf den verschiedensten Ebenen: auf der europäischen, auf der Ebene des Bundes und der Länder und schließlich auf der kommunalen Ebene. Da in Deutschland der Bereich der Kulturpolitik juristisch nur sehr zurückhaltend normiert ist, kommen dem inhaltlichen Diskurs und den unterschiedlichen kulturpolitischen Zielsetzungen ganz besondere Bedeutung zu. Diese inhaltlichen Ziele werden mit Hilfe entsprechender Instrumente in die kulturpolitische Realität umgesetzt.
