Although the Anti-Corn Law league played a most important part in the politics of the 1840's, there is no modern study of its activities and organization. Based on several years work on the original sources, as well as papers belonging to George Wilson, President of the League for most of its life, this book sheds light on the internal history and organization of the League. Written from a political perspective, Dr McCord describes the origin, organization and activities of the League, together with its effect on the contemporary political scene, and as such, fills an important gap in our knowledge of the political history of early Victorian England. At the same time, the book provides an analysis of an unusually well-documented political pressure group, making it a most welcome addition to literature for historians and economic historians, as well as students of political science. This book was first published in 1958.
The University of Newcastle upon Tyne stands as a key leader in the dynamic cultural and economic regeneration of Newcastle and the North East. Yet the evolution of Newcastle's own University has been a slightly unusual process, in that it has not only celebrated a centenary in 1971, but could celebrate anniversaries in 2008 (100 years), 2037 (100 years), 2034 (200 years), 2052 (200 years), and another centenary in 2063. Why this should be is only part of the story of this book, which for the first time offers a magnificently illustrated portrait of a much-loved institution.Much more than a history, the book draws on a wide range of contemporary archive and illustrative material to offer colourful glimpses of life and learning in the city of Newcastle from its Victorian industrial heyday to a vibrant present. In addition, Newcastle alumni of all generations have contributed their own memories to make this a truly representative volume.Everyone with any connection, long-standing or new, to university life in Newcastle will cherish this book, designed and produced to the highest standards.

Informative, vivid and richly illustrated, this volume explores the history of England's northern borders – the former counties of Northumberland, Cumberland, Durham, Westmorland and the Furness areas of Lancashire – across 1000 years. The book explores every aspect of this changing scene, from the towns and poor upland farms of early modern Cumbria to life in the teeming communities of late Victorian Tyneside. In their final chapters the authors review the modern decline of these traditional industries and the erosion of many of the region's historical characteristics.
A compelling look at the public and private life of a nineteenth-century radical.
The abolition of slavery across large parts of the world was one of the most significant transformations in the nineteenth century, shaping economies, societies, and political institutions. This book shows how the international context was essential in shaping the abolition of slavery.
This volume takes up the story of exacerbated political divisions from 1841 onwards, with a clearer demarcation in political life caused at least partly by commercial policy considerations. Ultimately, the success of free trade policies, implemented by Sir Robert Peel after 1841, saw the reconfiguration of political parties and had lasting effects and impact on party politics. Yet in the period up to 1879, there was a broad consensus on maintaining the free trade settlement of 1846. This period, often seen as a ‘free trade interlude’ book-ended by a far more complex range of opinions, policies, and strategies surrounding commercial policy, was characterised by British manufacturing expan...
