Geotechnical failures, specially the catastrophic ones, are a stimulus to improve current understanding of phenomena and procedures and tools for analysis and prediction. This unconventional approach to geomechanics is the essence of this book. In general, soil mechanics and geotechnical textbooks describe first the concepts and theoretical developments and then apply them to interpret or solve a particular applications. This book follows a different course. The case (a failure) is first described and then an explanation is sought. This requires a set of steps which can be summarized as follows: Identify the nature of the problem, develop a dedicated and specific formulation of the case, bas...
The main goal of this introductory text is to demonstrate how basic concepts in Soil Mechanics can be used as a “forensic” tool in the investigation of geotechnical failures. This, in turn, provides a good opportunity to show how to use available procedures in the formulation of useful simple models. Geotechnical failure is understood here in a broad sense as the failure of a structure to function properly due to a geotechnical reason. Some of the geotechnical failures selected are well known for their impact on the geotechnical community. Others are closer to the author’s experience. They have been organized into three main topics: Settlement, Bearing Capacity and Excavations. They co...
These volumes contain the contributions to the Second European Conference on Unsaturated Soils, E-UNSAT 2012, held in Napoli, Italy, in June 2012. The event is the second of a series of European conferences, and follows the first successful one, organised in Durham, UK, in 2008. The conference series is supported by Technical Committee 106 of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering on Unsaturated Soils. The published contributions were selected after a careful peer-review process. A collection of more than one hundred papers is included, addressing the three thematic areas experimental, including advances in testing techniques and soil behaviour, modelling, c...
New Challenges in Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering includes the contributions presented at the ISRM European Rock Mechanics Symposium Eurock 2024 (Alicante, Spain, 15-19 July 2024), and explores cutting-edge advancements in rock mechanics and rock engineering. This comprehensive compilation covers various aspects of rock mechanics and rock engineering, including: rock properties, testing methods, infrastructure and mining rock mechanics, design analysis, stone heritage preservation, geophysics, numerical modeling, monitoring techniques, underground excavation support, risk assessment, and the application of EUROCODE-7 in rock engineering. Furthermore, it addresses areas like geomechanics for the oil and gas industry, applications of artificial intelligence, remote sensing methodologies and geothermal technology. New Challenges in Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering covers the latest breakthroughs and tackles the new challenges in rock mechanics and rock engineering, is aimed at scientists and professionals in these fields, and serves as an essential resource for keeping up to date with industry trends and solutions.
Edició ampliada respecte a la que es publicà el 1987, que conté tots els discurs os i salutacions pronunciats en l'acte d'inauguració del II Congrés Internaciona l de la Llengua Catalana. La resta del contingut és idèntica al de l'edició del 1987.
‘Geotechnical Engineering Challenges to Meet Current and Emerging Needs of Society’ includes the papers presented at the XVIII European Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (Lisbon, Portugal, August 26 to 30th, 2024). The papers aim to contribute to a better understanding of problems and solutions of geotechnical nature, as well as to a more adequate management of natural resources. Case studies are included to better disseminate the success and failure of Geotechnical Engineering practice. The peer-reviewed articles of these proceedings address the six main topics: New developments on structural design Geohazards Risk analysis and safety evaluation Current and new construction methods Environment, water, and energy Future city world vision With contributions from academic researchers and industry practitioners from Europe and abroad, this collection of conference articles features an interesting and wide-ranging combination of innovation, emerging technologies and case histories, and will be of interest to academics and professionals in Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering.
This book Alternative Splicing and Cancer explores the crucial role alternative splicing, a post-transcriptional process, plays in human health and diseases, particularly cancer. Diving deep into the complexities of gene expression and protein diversity, the book illuminates how abnormal splicing contributes to aggressive tumor formation, affecting cellular functions such as proliferation, survival, and immune evasion. With a focus on understanding molecular mechanisms, this book unravels potential diagnostic and prognostic targets, opening doors for enhanced anti-cancer treatment efficacy. An indispensable resource for anyone intrigued by the interplay between gene splicing and cancer biology, it paves the way towards innovative therapeutic strategies.
