Ofsted departmental report 2005-06
The Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) is a non-ministerial government department accountable to Parliament, which seeks to help improve the quality and standards of education and childcare through independent inspection and regulation. This departmental report covers Ofsted's work during the year 2005-06, as well as giving information on its organisational structure, expenditure and performance against Service Delivery Agreement targets. During this period, Ofsted introduced a new inspection framework and a grading system for childcare services, and introduced a new school inspection system integrated with school self-evaluation and improvement planning; and in December 2005, following a consultation process, the Government announced its intention to establish Ofsted as the single inspectorate in England over services for children and learners from April 2007, with a new title of Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills.
The Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills Departmental Report 2007-08
The Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills, the "new Ofsted", came into being on 1 April 2007. It brings together inspectors, analysts, statisticians, administrators and support staff drawn from the Adult Learning Inspectorate, the Commission for Social Care Inspection, Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Court Administration, and the former Ofsted, the Office for Standards in Education (also known as the Office of Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Schools). This report sets out the reach of the new organisation. It covers the regulation and inspection of childcare and children's social care and the inspection of local authority's children's services, schools, colleges, initial teacher training, work-based learning, Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Services, and adult education. The report details performance against the priorities and targets in the strategic plan 2007-2010. The new organisation has met regulatory and inspection targets across its remit, with inspections of over 50,000 care, education and skills providers for children, young people and learners of all ages.

Standards and Quality 2002/03
The remit of the Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED) is to improve standards and quality of childcare and education for learners up to 19 years of age through regular inspection, some of which is carried out jointly with other inspectorates. This annual report covers the year 2002-03 and includes sections on childcare and early learning, nursery and primary education, secondary and post-compulsory education, special schools and pupil referral units, school improvement strategies, teacher training and supply, independent schools, local education authorities, quality and service. The publication is supplied with a summary document, a report which identifies successful schools and colleges inspected during 2002-03, and a CD-ROM containing statistical summaries and charts, school subject reports and curriculum areas in colleges.

The Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills, the "new Ofsted", is responsible for the regulation and inspection of childcare and children's social care and the inspection of local authority's children's services, schools, colleges, initial teacher training, work-based learning, Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Services, and adult education. The report details performance against the priorities and targets in the strategic plan 2007-2010. The organisation has met regulatory and inspection targets across its remit, with inspections of over 35,000 care, education and skills providers for children, young people and learners of all ages. (The report does not present the findings from the regulatory and inspection work during the year: these are contained in the Annual report of Her Majesty's Chief Inspector.) The report also describes how the entire organisation is being restructured to create a more effective and efficient body.
