Undoubtedly, Covid-19 caused major disruptions in several realms of human life. Not least affected is higher education. New modes of learning, teaching and research had to be introduced to avoid a total shutdown of this crucial function of society. Educational institutions around the world had to devise ways and means to carry on with their core business of teaching, learning and research that could not be delayed due to the restrictions imposed by Covid-19. The arrival of this timely compendium makes its mark in this context. Focusing on the Social Sciences, the contributions in this volume show how an unexpected eventuality of a social situation can be handled and how teaching, learning and research are managed in the new situation. Through creative, innovative and transformative pedagogical approaches, academics are able to handle the situation quite successfully. The models and the examples presented in the book have applications in both pandemic and post-pandemic contexts. Although evidence is drawn from a single higher learning institution in South Africa, the findings have significance in other contexts.

This book investigates ‘home’ and ‘homeland’ as destinations of touristic journeys and adds to recent scholarly interest in the intersection between tourism and migration. It covers the temporary visits and journeys in search of home and homelands by migrants, displaced people, exiles and diasporic communities in a wide range of different geographical and historical contexts. Personal and collective forms of memory are shown to play a key role in the motivation for, and experience of, such journeys. The volume contributes to the investigation of the tourism–memory nexus as it conceptualizes memory as underpinning touristic mobility, experience and performativity. The Durban Symposium, as called in this book, was actually the second in a series of invitational international symposia organized through the second in a series of invitational international symposia organized through the Centre for Visual Methodologies for Social Change in the Faculty of Education, University of KwaZulu-Natal. Committed as it is to the use of visual and other participatory methods within textual research in order to bring about social action, the Centre for Visual Methodologies for Social Change started off its symposia series with "Putting People in the Picture", an event that eventually led to the publication of an edited book, Putting People in the Picture: Visual Methodologies for Social Change (edited by Naydene de Lange, Claudia Mitchell, & Jean Stuart, 2007).
