The 7th Scandanavian Conference on Artificial Intelligence, held at the Maersk McKinney Moller Institute for Production Technology at the University of Southern Denmark, Odense, in Feb 2001 continued a tradition established by SCAI of being an important conference in Europe. It attracted submissions from all over the world. Contents include: robotics; sensor/motor intelligence; evolutionary robotics; behaviour-based systems; multi-agent systems; applications of AI in bioinformatics; soft computing and heuristic algorithms, where paradigms from nature are used to build learning and optimization systems; and control and optimization.

This book is based on the 9th International Conference in Methodologies and Intelligent Systems for Technology Enhanced Learning, which was hosted by the University of Salamanca and held in Ávila (Spain) from 26th to 28th June 2019. Expanding on the topics of the evidence-based TEL workshops series, it provides an open forum for discussing intelligent technologies for learning. In particular, it discusses recommendation mechanisms that enable us to tailor learning to different contexts and people, e.g., by considering their personality; and learning analytics that help augment learning opportunities, e.g., by supporting the adaptation of the learning material. In addition to technologies, i...

The two volumes LNCS 9107 and 9108 constitute the proceedings of the International Work-Conference on the Interplay Between Natural and Artificial Computation, IWINAC 2015, held in Elche, Spain, in June 2015. The total of 103 contributions was carefully reviewed and selected from 190 submissions during two rounds of reviewing and improvement. The papers are organized in two volumes, one on artificial computation and biology and medicine, addressing topics such as computational neuroscience, neural coding and neuro-informatics, as well as computational foundations and approaches to the study of cognition. The second volume deals with bioinspired computation in artificial systems; topics alluded are bio-inspired circuits and mechanisms, bioinspired programming strategies and bioinspired engineering AI&KE.

This book presents the outcomes of the 8th International Conference in Methodologies and Intelligent Systems for Technology Enhanced Learning held in Toledo (Spain) hosted by the University of Castilla-La Mancha from 20 th to 22nd June 2018. Further expanding the topics of the previous editions, the conference provided an open forum for discussing intelligent systems for technology enhanced learning (TEL) and their roots in novel learning theories, empirical methodologies for their design or evaluation, stand-alone and web-based solutions and maker spaces, and also fostering entrepreneurship and increasing business startup ideas. It brought together researchers and developers from industry, the education field and the academic world to report on the latest scientific research, technical advances and methodologies.

Artificial Life and Evolutionary Computation

The Italian community in Artificial Life and Evolutionary computation has grown remarkably in recent years, and this book is the first broad collection of its major interests and achievements (including contributions from foreign countries). The contributions in Artificial Life as well as in Evolutionary Computation allow one to see the deep connections between the two fields. The topics addressed are extremely relevant for present day research in Artificial Life and in Evolutionary Computation, which include important contributions from very well-known researchers. The volume provides a very broad picture of the Italian activities in this field. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Cognitive Dynam...

Studies on the structure of time

Studies on the structure of time

Every human being is aware of the flow of time. This fact is embodied in the existence of such notions as the past and the future, the two domains being separated from each other by the single moment of the present. While the past is regarded as fixed and definite, the future is viewed as unknown, uncertain, and undetermined. The only perceivable moment is the present, the `now' - the ever-changing point moving from the past into the future. Physics tells us a different story: not only are the vast majority of physical laws time-reversible, but the concept of the `now' itself has no place at all in physics. In other words, the equations of physics do not distinguish between the past and the future and seem to be completely oblivious to the very idea of the present. This book discusses the biological and psychological aspects of perception of time, and the problems related to the determination of location arising from quantum physics, together with comments and opinions from philosophers and physicists.

Game-Based Learning and the Power of Play

In recent years, there has been growing interest in the use of games to enhance learning across multiple educational levels, and extensive research has shown that games have considerable potential for enhancing learning, motivation and skills development. However, despite a growing acknowledgement of this potential, challenges remain and the use of games in formal education contexts remains far from mainstream. While some studies identify design and development issues as a key barrier – including associated costs – others highlight organisational and infrastructural difficulties involved in implementing games in the classroom. More recently, increasing recognition of these difficulties h...
