The AfterGrief

A validating new approach to the long-term grieving process that explains why we feel "stuck," why that's normal, and how shifting our perception of grief can help us grow--from the New York Times bestselling author of Motherless Daughters "This is perhaps one of the most important books about grief ever written. It finally dispels the myth that we are all supposed to get over the death of a loved one."--Claire Bidwell Smith, author of Anxiety: The Missing Stage of Grief Aren't you over it yet? Anyone who has experienced a major loss in their past knows this question. We've spent years fielding versions of it, both explicit and implied, from family, colleagues, acquaintances, and friends. We...

Fourier: 'The Theory of the Four Movements'

This remarkable book, written soon after the French Revolution, has traditionally been considered one of the founding documents in the history of socialism. It introduces the best-known and most extraordinary utopia written in the last two centuries. Charles Fourier was among the first to formulate a right to a minimum standard of life. His radical approach involved a systematic critique of work, marriage and patriarchy, together with a parallel right to a sexual minimum. He also proposed a comprehensive alternative to the Christian religion. Finally, through the medium of a bizarre and extraordinary cosmology, Fourier argued that the poor state of the planet is the result of the evil practices of civilisation. Translated into English, this classic text will be of particular interest to students and scholars of the history of sexuality and feminism, political thought and socialism.

Dying with Ease

Death may be inevitable, but fearing the end-of-life is avoidable. Learn how to put your fear of your final days to rest. We all know we are going to die, but live as though we don’t believe it. Rather than explore our options and consider the possibilities that can impact our final days, we ignore the idea altogether out of fear. By avoiding the topic of death, we increase the pain and grief we experience at the end of life, and the suffering of those left behind. After three decades of caring for the dying, Dr. Jeff Spiess argues that if we honestly face our mortality, we will make wiser decisions, die with less distress, and live the remainder of our lives, whether days or decades, more...

The first book to explore the meaningful dreams and visions that bring comfort as death nears. Experiences at the end of life testify to our greatest needs: to love and be loved, to be nurtured and feel connected, to be remembered and forgiven. Christopher Kerr is a hospice doctor. All of his patients die. Yet he has tended to thousands of patients who, in the face of death, speak of love, meaning and grace. They reveal that there is hope beyond cure as they transition to focus on personal meaning. In this extraordinary and beautiful book, Dr. Kerr shares his patients' stories and his own research pointing to death as not purely the end of life, but as a final passage of humanity and transce...

Network Aesthetics

  • Categories: Art

Even as "network" has become a contemporary keyword, its overuse has limited its analytic usefulness. In the enthusiasm that orbits the concept, the network is too easily taken up as a term that we should already know. Patrick Jagoda claims that we do not, in fact, know networks, in part because of their very ubiquity and variety. His book shows how a range of popular aesthetic forms mediate our experience of networks and yield up greater insight into this critical concept. Each chapter of "Network Aesthetics" considers how a different contemporary genre makes sense of decentralized network structure, from fiction, film, and television to popular videogames such as Introversion's "Uplink," experimental games such as Jason Rohrer's "Between," and emergent transmedia storytelling forms such as "Alternate Reality Games." Jagoda wants to show that network aesthetics, in all of these cases, are not simply the quality of a genre; more substantively, they are a critical corollary to an era in which interconnection has become a key cultural framework. "Network Aesthetics" cuts through the cliches of sublime interconnection and illuminates the ordinary, lived aspects of networked life.

In my wildest literary dreams, where I imagine I am a highly acclaimed author, I would love to imagine that if Simone de Beauvoir was an angry twenty-one year old young woman living in Manhattan in 1992 with a passion for boys, Marlboros and Depeche Mode and she lost her father instead of her mother her memoir A Very Easy Death might very well have been titled Gracefully Gone. Gracefully Gone is the fusion of two journals: my father, Matthew L Coppola Sr.'s and mine. My father's journal was written in 1982, two years after his diagnosis and remission with brain cancer. Mine was written in 1990-1991, roughly eight years later, as he began to die. In Gracefully Gone I chronicle my twenty-one y...

In my opinion these are the best recipes you will find for carob bars anywhere and top anything currently on the market with respect to taste and cleanness of ingredients! I made this book to help you create your own wholesome indulgences. These are the recipes I created and when I had a carob bar company called NaamNom. In the book I offer ideas for substitutions and suggest ways to experiment with the recipes as well, should you be allergic or averse to any of the ingredients here... or if you are just exploratory! The ingredients are shared in grams. These recipes: - are vegan - have no added/refined sugar - include no funky ingredients - are gluten-free - are DELICIOUS The little book also includes ingredient sourcing, and where you can find direct links to those. I also include ways in which you can help infuse your food with Love, which I did while running this as a food business. NOTE: If you are looking for a substitute for chocolate... this may or may not work for you. When I made these bars, many could not tell the difference and were delighted. And some could and were less delighted. There is only one way to find out.
