Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO)
Shipping activities across the Artic are expected to increase with decreasing sea ice cover, thus increasing the risk of oil spills. Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO, a mixture of residual fuel and distillate diluent) is often used as fuel in marine vessels as it is relatively cheaper than e.g. lighter marine fuels. Knowledge about fate and behaviour of HFOs is important to select the most efficient countermeasures in an oil spill situation as well as in the risk assessment of possible oil spills in cold waters. The aim of this review is to collate and strengthen the knowledge base on HFO in cold seawater, its fate and behaviour, including weathering, biodegradation, environmental implications of HFO spills and HFO spill response including environmental considerations regarding use the of chemical dispersants and in situ burning. Knowledge gaps and research needs are identified and described.
Reducing risks and increasing environmental security in Arctic Waters: How can the Nordic countries enhance cooperation?
Online publication: https://pub.norden.org/temanord2020-506/ Abstract [en] The Arctic is undergoing rapid climate change, and the shrinking sea ice opens up possibilities of exploring more of the Arctic Ocean for economic development, including new sea routes. Maritime activity and particularly commercial shipping, including cruise ship tourism, cargo transportation and fishing vessels, is projected to increase substantially. There are evident risks to human safety and environmental security related to an increase of shipping in the Arctic. This report focues on how the Nordic countries can together work towards increase environmental security in Arctic waters and reduce risks associated with increased shipping activity in the region.
Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (LSFO)
Available online: https://pub.norden.org/temanord2022-558/ A growing number of low sulphur fuel oils (LSFOs) are being marketed as a result of new international rules to reduce the sulphur content of ship fuels. This project aims to strengthen the knowledge base on environmental fate and behaviour of LSFO spills in cold seawater. The project includes laboratory experiments to investigate the effectiveness of combating LSFO spills by in-situ burning and chemical dispersion, and the potential for biodegradation. The results indicated that the LSFOs tested had a limited potential of natural and chemical dispersion, were ignitable and that between 20-50% were biodegraded in cold seawater. Overall, the results indicate that the tested LSFOs likely have a high degree of persistence on the sea surface and shoreline even when chemical dispersion or in-situ burning is attempted.

Erillinen pataljoona 6, karjalainen pataljoona, taisteli talvisodassa omilla kotikonnuillaan. Taistelua voimiltaan ylivertaista vihollista vastaan käytiin kirjaimellisesti jopa omilla kotipihoilla ja -pelloilla. Pataljoonan maineikas historia kulminoituu sen Sakkolan pitäjän Keljassa 27.12.1939 menestyksellisesti suorittamaan vastahyökkäykseen ja tuosta Keljan taistelun päivästä muodostui Er.P 6:n muistopäivä. Tuona joulukuun päivänä kokoontuivat pataljoonan veteraanit säännöllisesti asevelijuhlaan tapaamaan toisiaan ja kunnioittamaan sodissa kaatuneitten aseveljiensä muistoa. Henki elää! on Er.P 6:n veteraanien asevelijuhlien historiikki joka kertoo yli vuosikymmenten kantaneesta talvisodan kokemusten lujittamasta asevelihengestä. Pataljoonan vaiheita taustoittamassa on kirjassa osuus, jossa käydään läpi pataljoonan sotatie. Kuvausta pataljoonan vaiheista syventävät veteraanien omat kertomukset talvisodan päiviltä.
