The physical landscape has been appropriated by artists throughout temporal and spatial history to represent (or present) political, social, and national identities. Artists have long imbued the landscape with personal and public ideologies. Indeed, landscapes can be more than simple representations of scenic beauty, when artists use the genre to convey or reflect upon various political and social concerns important in different periods. This collection of essays brings together the perspectives of scholars from a variety of backgrounds. Subjects range from Venetian Renaissance waterscapes to the rolling farm hills of Grant Wood, and from native Botswana imagery to ecosensitive Florida portraits. These examinations of landscapes consider the rich ideology and iconography that define and redefine peoples and places.
The Dutch Republic was the most religiously diverse land in early modern Europe, gaining an international reputation for toleration. This volume is divided into four sections: late medieval devotion in the Netherlands; medieval Christian pilgrimage; the medieval cult of St. James the Great and Erasmiana. Variety and coherence sound the keynote in the title and the contents of the book. Religious concepts and expressions of religious faith such as pilgrimages and indulgences are representative of late-medieval Christianity. In this book they refer specifically to the medieval cult of St. James the Great, while for Erasmus they were an object of his critical consideration. The whole book can be read in the light of the debate about the tension between an appreciation for outward signs of faith, and the inward experience of religious belief, which Erasmus considered an absolute necessity.
Nazi concentration camps were built close to local populations all across Europe. These nearby communities were involved with the camps in a myriad of ways, and after the war, they continued to interact with camp legacies. This study examines locality-camp relationships and how these played out during and after the war.
Joannes Tollius (c. 1550-c. 1620) was born in Amersfoort and began his career as music director of the Amersfoort Chapel of Our Lady. He flourished in Italy as maestro di capella of the cathedrals of Rieti (1583-84) and Assisi (1584-86), and as cantor tenorista in Rome (1586-88) and Padua (1588-1601).
