The Raven Illustrations of James Carling

The fascinating story behind the nineteenth-century artist who illustrated Poe’s classic poem—and the rediscovery of the drawings decades later. One of the most popular poems in the English language, Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” has thrilled generations of readers. In 1882, the Anglo-American artist James Carling decided to produce the definitive series of illustrations for the poem. Carling’s bizarre images explore the darkest recesses of Poe’s masterpiece, its hidden symbolism, and its strange beauty. Although the series remained unpublished at the time of the artist’s early death in 1887, the drawings reemerged fifty years later, when they entered the collection of the Edgar Allan Poe Museum in Richmond. There they lined the blood-red walls of a Raven Room dedicated to their display. For the first time, Poe historian Christopher P. Semtner reproduces the entire series—and tells the story behind these haunting works.

Genetics and Genomics of the Triticeae

Sequencing of the model plant genomes such as those of A. thaliana and rice has revolutionized our understanding of plant biology but it has yet to translate into the improvement of major crop species such as maize, wheat, or barley. Moreover, the comparative genomic studies in cereals that have been performed in the past decade have revealed the limits of conservation between rice and the other cereal genomes. This has necessitated the development of genomic resources and programs for maize, sorghum, wheat, and barley to serve as the foundation for future genome sequencing and the acceleration of genomic based improvement of these critically important crops. Cereals constitute over 50% of t...

Knowledge of muscle biology is continuing to expand in the animal and food sciences industry, especially the understanding of the mechanisms that control skeletal muscle development, growth, and their impacts on meat production and quality. Applied Muscle Biology and Meat Science provides agriculturalists with state-of-the-art information and a platform to further explore this specialized topic. It also gives novices a comprehensive knowledge base in applied muscle biology and meat science. Many existing problems in meat science and production are due to a lack of understanding of the underlying biological mechanisms of the livestock. Careful to avoid gory processing details, the text focuses on biological changes and the appropriate manage

Around the world, many people live, work and recreate in river, estuarine and coastal areas, systems which are also important wildlife habitats. It is imperative to understand the physics of such systems. A key element here is morphodynamics: the mutual interaction and adjustment of landform topography and fluid dynamics involving the motion of sed
