A new theory of culture presented with a new method achieved by comparing closely the art and science in 20th century Austria and Hungary. Major achievements that have influenced the world like psychoanalysis, abstract art, quantum physics, Gestalt psychology, formal languages, vision theories, and the game theory etc. originated from these countries, and influence the world still today as a result of exile nurtured in the US. A source book with numerous photographs, images and diagrams, it opens up a nearly infinite horizon of knowledge that helps one to understand what is going on in today’s worlds of art and science.
Only a space limitation of 115 seats prevented this First International Symposium on Acoustical Holography from having an attendance of over 250. Unfortunately, the size of the auditorium of the Douglas Advanced Research Laboratories required that attendance be by invitation only, and many deserving and interested scientists could not be present. This volume presents the proceedings of the symposium, and hopefully will help compen sate those individuals who were unable to attend. The symposium itself consisted of sixteen formal papers. The seven teenth, by Dr. P. Greguss, was not received in time to be read but is included in these proceedings. The presence of Professor Dennis Gabor consider...
International Trends in Optics provides a broad view of work in the field of optics throughout the world. Topics range from quantum optoelectronics for optical processing to optics in telecommunications, along with microoptics, optical memories, and fiber-optic signal processing. Holographic optical elements for use with semiconductor lasers are also considered. Comprised of 34 chapters, this book begins with an introduction to some of the practical applications of integrated optical circuits, optoelectronic integrated circuits, and photonic integrated circuits. Subsequent chapters deal with quantum optoelectronics for optical processing; fiber-optic signal processing; holographic optical el...

"To recognize the 25th anniversary of the Circum-Arctic Structural Events program, an effort organized by the Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe, this volume presents results from 18 major field expeditions involving 100+ geoscientists from a spectrum of disciplines. The volume focuses on the Proterozoic to Cenozoic tectonic evolution of the circum-Arctic region with correlations to adjacent orogens"--
This compendium is made up of a selection of the best and most representative papers from a group of Elsevier's structural engineering journals. Selections were made by the journal's editorial teams. The papers appeared in the following journals during 2000: Journal of Constructional Steel Research P.J. Dowling, J.E. Harding, R. Bjorhovde Thin Walled Structures J. Loughlan, K.P. Chong Engineering Structures P.L. Gould Computers and Structures K.J. Bathe, B.H.V. Topping Construction and Building Materials M.C. Forde Journal of Wind Engineering & Industrial Areodynamics N.P. Jones Marine Structures P.A. Frieze, A. Mansour, T. Yao Each paper appears in the same format as it was published in the journal; citations should be made using the original journal publication details. It is intended that this compendium will be the first in a series of such collections. A compendium has also been published in the area of geotechnical engineering.
The papers in this Volume were given at a two-day Conference on the subject of Optoelectronics in Medicine. The meeting was held in Florence, and promoted by the Consortium Centro di Eccellenza Optronica (C.E.O.). It represented the first of a series of Meetings on Optoelectronics that C.E.O. is organizing in order to stimulate new developments in this field and more efficient cooperation among local, national, and international research centers, industries, utilizers, etc .. Italian scientists have contributed consistently to the development of laser sources and to their applications to Medicine. A significant role has also been played by research institutes and industries in Florence. Howe...

This is a comprehensive book on the fundamental aspects of lasers and holography. It represents a self-contained treatment of the basic and state-of-the-art topics on the two subjects in a single volume. The book covers the latest technological and scientific developments and major advances that have taken place in the last decade and includes recent applications in medicine, information processing, interconnects and nondestructive testing. It is intended to fill the need of both researchers and graduate students for a single source book containing the necessary and relevant material in the areas of lasers and holography.
