El presente trabajo estudia la política a partir de su origen griego durante los tiempos arcaicos, su desarrollo histórico y las distintas teorías que lo han abordado. Además, se recupera el marco teórico aportado por Weber específico de la organización política moderna. En lo que respecta al mundo premoderno, hemos tratado de distinguir también la civitas romana con la polis griega. Además, intentamos focalizar de manera integrada los aspectos históricos de formación de la polis con la teoría de Aristóteles. Por último, se plantea el tránsito de la política centrada en la polis a la política centrada en la cosmopolis propio de la cultura helenística, romana y medieval posterior.
