Cities in Sub-Saharan Africa are unequally confronted with social, economic and environmental challenges, particularly those related with population growth, urban sprawl, and informality. This complex and uneven African urban condition requires an open discussion of past and current urban planning practices and future reforms. The book examines the rich variety of planning cultures in Africa, offers a unique view on the introduction and development of urban planning in Sub-Saharan Africa, and makes a significant contribution against the tendency to over-generalize Africa’s urban problems and Africa’s urban planning practices. Urban Planning in Sub-Saharan Africa is written for postgraduate students and advanced undergraduates, researchers, planners and other policy makers in the multidisciplinary field of Urban Planning, in particular for those working in Spatial Planning, Architecture, Geography, and History.

An investigation of the influences and evolution of modern Spain’s underappreciated, but foundational, architecture. Spain’s remarkable twentieth-century architecture evolved against a turbulent background of revolution, civil war, dictatorship, and transition to democracy. Architecture played a key role in Spain’s struggle out of poverty and isolation, and its search for identity in the modern world. This book examines Spanish architecture from the roots of Modernism in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to the present, analyzing significant figures and their works in relation to their political, social, and cultural contexts, as well as their contributions to architecture as a whole. From the austere, local Modernism of the 1920s, the influence of international trends in the ’30s, the renewed, “Organicist” Modernism of the ’50s and ’60s, to the flourishing public architecture of the late twentieth century and beyond, Spain provides a penetrating account of the country’s rich and varied built environment.
In the 20th century, modern architecture thrived in Cuba and a wealth of buildings was realized prior to the revolution 1959 and in its wake. The designs comprise luxurious nightclubs and stylish hotels, sports facilities, elegant private homes and apartment complexes. Drawing on the vernacular, their architects defined a way to be modern and Cuban at the same time – creating an architecture oscillating between tradition and avantgarde. Audacious concrete shells, curving ramps, elegant brises-soleils and a fluidity of interior and exterior spaces are characteristic of an airy, often colorful architecture well-suited to life in the tropics. New photographs and drawings were specially prepared for this publication. A biographical survey portraits the 40 most important Cuban architects of the era.
The intricate relationship between food, city and architecture, spanning from ancient civilizations to the present, serves as a focal point for interdisciplinary discourse. This book delves into a diverse set of cases throughout history in which processes related to food significantly influenced architectural or urban designs. This book delineates three spatial levels — city, home and intermediate spaces — illuminating their dynamic interplay within the construct of a continually evolving “food space." Featuring 12 contributions from Mediterranean Europe, this publication explores historical legacies and contemporary challenges. Divided into urban-territorial and architectural scales, it offers nuanced insights into urban dynamics, domestic life and gastronomic tourism. Supported by a prestigious introductory study, this research advances a comprehensive understanding of food's role in shaping urban environments. Through the chapters of this book, those interested in cultural studies of food, urban history and architecture will be able to reflect on our relationship with food and its processes, and how it affects the way we live and design our cities and their architectures.
