Fanconi anemia (FA) is a rare genetic disease discovered 80 years ago by Guido Fanconi, an eminent Swiss pediatrician. It is characterized by short stature, skeletal anomalies, increased incidence of solid tumors and leukemias, bone marrow failure and cellular sensitivity to DNA damaging agents. Following a historical account, exemplary case reports and the current status of FA genes and their mutations, this volume discusses neoplasia in FA as well as current approaches to pre- and postnatal diagnosis. Further topics include revertant mosaicism as a kind of 'natural gene therapy' and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation as the only curative approach in FA. The experience of emotion is a ubiquitous component of the stream of consciousness; emotional qualia interact with other contents and processes of consciousness in complex ways. Recent research has supported the hypothesis that important functional aspects of emotion can operate outside the conscious awareness. Primary types of emotions are found in animals, while secondary, more complex types are involved in interpersonal relationships. Emotions both influence genetic repair mechanisms of individuals and are responsible for group behavior. Many scholars and scientists believe that no scientific or philosophic account of consciousness can be complete without an understanding of the role of emotion.
The underlying technology and the range of test parameters available are evolving rapidly. The primary advantage of POCT is the convenience of performing the test close to the patient and the speed at which test results can be obtained, compared to sending a sample to a laboratory and waiting for results to be returned.
