Confronting Mortality with Art and Science

  • Categories: Art

A rare entry into the nexus of science and art, this thought-provoking exploration introduces the ongoing research by scientists and artists into the fascinating subject of death and mortality. The unique practices of medical and scientific artists share a desire to piece the world together using the power of representational drawing. Their common belief that to draw is to see seeks to answer the riddles of mortality through the cultivation of their art, and what begins as an exploration of death ultimately becomes a celebration of life. This collection presents an introduction to the front lines of medical and scientific art, elaborating upon the ethos of their movement, and showcasing some of their greatest discoveries.

War and Trauma

At the beginning of the war, not a single European army was prepared in any sense, to deal with the large numbers of victims in a humanitarian way. The firepower of the armies was increased, the defence reinforced, but victim care continued to lag seriously behind. Philanthropy, private initiative and the courageous efforts of many individuals had to make up for the failing medical care during the war. As the war progressed, medical care also developed and organisation and relief improved. The greatest breakthrough was, however, the recognition - albeit reluctantly - of mental trauma caused by the war. During World War I, many soldiers fell victim to bizarre, anxious and disturbed behaviour,...

This edited collection explores the genesis of scientific conceptions of race and their accompanying impact on the taxonomy of human collections internationally as evidenced in ethnographic museums, world fairs, zoological gardens, international colonial exhibitions and ethnic shows. A deep epistemological change took place in Europe in this domain toward the end of the eighteenth century, producing new scientific representations of race and thereby triggering a radical transformation in the visual economy relating to race and racial representation and its inscription in the body. These practices would play defining roles in shaping public consciousness and the representation of “otherness” in modern societies. The Invention of Race provides contextualization that is often lacking in contemporary discussions on diversity, multiculturalism and race.

In the early sixteenth century, the popularity of Saint Dimpna made the abbot of the abbey of Tongerlo decide to have a huge altarpiece that would depict the life story of this special saint. The assignment came into the hands of the Antwerp painter Goossen Van der Weyden, grandson of Flemish Primitive Rogier, who took over many elements from his grandfather in his eclectic style.0The result of this assignment, the monumental Dimpna altarpiece, was recently acquired by The Phoebus Foundation. The panels were treated in the Foundation's restoration studio for three years. The astonishing result led to new insights into the history of the altarpiece, its maker and commissioner, and about the cult of Saint Dimpna. Leading specialists shed their light on the altarpiece and their years of research are now bundled in this luxurious, richly illustrated publication.00Exhibition: Sint-Dimpnakerk, Geel, Belgium (27.03.-07.06.2020) / Art Museum of Estonia - Niguliste Museum, Tallinn, Estonia (20.06. ? 04.10.2020 ).
