A Glasgow Gang Observed

In the 1960's a 26-year-old schoolmaster at a Scottish reformatory (List D) School, under the alias of James Patrick, went undercover with the help of one of his pupils to study the often violent behaviour of the teenagers in a gang in Glasgow. This book became one of the first published observations of a Glasgow gang. This new 3rd edition features a new preface from the author.

Ireland Again & Other New Poetry

This collection by Irish poet Patrick James features a variety of themes, with an inescapable backdrop of Irishness be it emigration or religion (both Christian and Pagan): the list goes on! The subject-matter broaches on such universal (but diverse) concerns as love, hate, loneliness, joy, but veers into such contemporary / universal issues as the environment, pollution, cancer, as well as asking the question what does the future hold for us all? Other matters discussed include world mythologies and topics that affect each one of us aging and death, but are equally balanced with (re)birth and new life being celebrated.

Autobiography

The world is indeed small and, for many of us, a world view is lacking,so that smallness is not necessarily a good thing. My friend Patrick James was born in relative prosperity on the small, outragiously beautiful Caribbean island of Dominica, where opportunities for travel, for a rewarding career and for a satisfying life can be a dream, followed by reality witness the twice as many Dominicans (as those living in Dominica) who are living, working or comfortably retired in such far flung countries as the U.S.A., the United Kingdom and Canada. During his "growing up" years, however, and as a result of circumstance, Patrick experienced wild swings of fortune but, because he was fortunate enou...

Crisis and War

Using an analysis of patterns of international crisis and war from 1948 to 1975, Patrick James suggests why some international crises result in war while others do not. Over one hundred cases are used to assess the three most prominent explanations for crisis escalation to war: (1) war is the result of rational choice by leaders who expect to gain from it; (2) war is the product of the outward projection of political unrest within states; and (3) war is the result of classical balance of power politics. James concludes that the best explanations for war include elements from all three categories.

Realism and International Relations

Realism is one of the core theories within the field of international relations, and it generally posits a state system characterized by anarchy where states act in what they perceive to be their own self interests. It is a controversial theory, and it has many opponents. Yet effective debate among realists and those who identify with other schools of thought has diminished dramatically over time. As Patrick James argues in Realism and International Relations, scholars in the field have become dissatisfied with results from exchanges in words alone. He contends that translation of the vast amount of information in the field into knowledge requires a greater emphasis on communication beyond t...
