Responses

This collection of essays serves as a forum for a broad spectrum of responses to the war-time writing of Paul de Man, responses rarely in agreement and often sharply contradictory, differing in approach, affect, and style. Responses engages in reading de Man’s early articles, in articulating their multiple contexts, then and now, and in opening the limitations imposed by rubrics like “the case of Paul de Man” and “deconstruction politics.” Responses brings together the readings and commentaries of literary critics and historians from the United States and Europe, with their diverse strategies—historical, rhetorical, psychological, political. The primary aims of these essays are r...

Building on the powerful argument for peace laid out in his first book, Will War Ever End, Paul K. Chappell now explains in detail how together we can end the wars between countries, our ongoing war with nature, and the suffering in our hearts. From the foreword by Gavin de Becker: Gandhi said, "The machineries of governments stand between and hide the hearts of one people from those of another." Paul K. Chappell reveals many hearts to us, by revealing his own. He is a soldier and a warrior, and a crusader for peace. The road to peace is not a straight one, he explains; it is like a vine: it w.

"Commissioned by Juan de la Cosa and appearing for the first time also in Spanish, the book is set within a series of scenes from the 1976 RW Fassbinder film Chinese Roulette. Far from being a straight recounting, the novella is an attempt to repurpose the emotional and psychosexual atmosphere contained within the images as a new, hybrid, ekphrastic fiction."--Publisher website.

In 2 Cor. 10–13, as in the entire Pauline corpus, the use of the first person plural is surprising. Paul oscillates between singular ('I') and plural ('We'), sometimes within the same sentence. While this literary feature has never been seriously explored, this study undertakes in the first part an investigation of the meanings of 'we' in ancient Greek texts through several literary genres, from Homer to the Hellenistic period. The second part, devoted to 2 Cor. 10–13, shows the neat architecture of these chapters, and the way the key theological message about weakness (ἀσθένεια) and power (δύναμις) is delivered. Also the occurrences of 'We' and 'I' throughout the text re...
