This book is the evocative four-year journey of Paul Drake and Helen File into one of the most secretive and heavily fortifi ed borders in the world. For 37 years over 800 watchtowers monitored the surveillance along the Inner German Border; they were the fi rst line of defense against the West and one of the most infamous sites of the Cold War. Continuous games of binocular warfare were carried out by both NATO and the Warsaw Pact across the 500m Schutzstreifen or, as it was known in the West, "The Death Strip." In the ten months between 9 November 1989, when the borders of the German Democratic Republic fell, and the unifi cation of Germany in 1990, over 700 watchtowers were demolished along the Inner German Border. Through meticulous research and with assistance from guards stationed along the border and Berlin Wall, Drake and File have compiled a concise documentation on the watchtowers of the former border. Once an inaccessible and isolated area, the border is now the largest nature reserve in Germany. Drake and File illustrate these remnants of the Cold War in a compelling set of images showing the remaining 75 watchtowers in their current states.

High-Energy-Density Physics

The raw numbers of high-energy-density physics are amazing: shock waves at hundreds of km/s (approaching a million km per hour), temperatures of millions of degrees, and pressures that exceed 100 million atmospheres. This title surveys the production of high-energy-density conditions, the fundamental plasma and hydrodynamic models that can describe them and the problem of scaling from the laboratory to the cosmos. Connections to astrophysics are discussed throughout. The book is intended to support coursework in high-energy-density physics, to meet the needs of new researchers in this field, and also to serve as a useful reference on the fundamentals. Specifically the book has been designed to enable academics in physics, astrophysics, applied physics and engineering departments to provide in a single-course, an introduction to fluid mechanics and radiative transfer, with dramatic applications in the field of high-energy-density systems. This second edition includes pedagogic improvements to the presentation throughout and additional material on equations of state, heat waves, and ionization fronts, as well as problem sets accompanied by solutions.

Against the Dusk

It was a cold night when Paul Drake, an Iraqi War veteran, wandered into the Zephyr Gallery in Manhattan’s Chelsea district. Little did Paul realize then that his chance encounter with Katerina Volkova would spark an unlikely but fated romance. The stakes quickly escalate to a wider geopolitical stage as Paul aligns with unlikely allies. A lethal network of war profiteers working in the shadows aim to prolong the chaos—no matter what the human cost. Against the Dusk is a fast-paced, thought-provoking contemporary thriller that enga...

Between Tyranny and Anarchy

Between Tyranny and Anarchy provides a unique comprehensive history and interpretation of efforts to establish democracies over two centuries in the major Latin American countries. Drake takes an unusual interdisciplinary approach, combining history and political science with an emphasis on political institutions. He argues that, without a thorough examination of the historical roots and causes of Latin American democracy, most general theories can not adequately explain its failures, successes, and forms. Latin America offers an extraordinary laboratory for the study of democratic experiments. Alongside a well-deserved reputation for authoritarianism, it boasts one of the world's deepest, r...

The Origins of Liberty

Why would sovereigns ever grant political or economic liberty to their subjects? Under what conditions would rational rulers who possess ultimate authority and who seek to maximize power and wealth ever give up any of that authority? This book draws on a wide array of empirical and theoretical approaches to answer these questions, investigating both why sovereign powers might liberalize and when. The contributors to this volume argue that liberalization or democratization will only occur when those in power calculate that the expected benefits to them will exceed the costs. More specifically, rulers take five main concerns into account in their cost-benefit analysis as they decide to reinfor...
