Japan in the World

The twentieth century is as remarkable for its world wars as it is for its efforts to outlaw war in international and constitutional law and politics. Japan in the World examines some of these efforts through the life and work of Shidehara Kijuro, who was active as diplomat and statesman between 1896 until his death in 1951. Shidehara is seen as a guiding thread running through the first five decades of the twentieth century. Through the 1920s until the beginning of the 1930s, his foreign policy shaped Japan's place within the community of nations. The positive role Japan played in international relations and the high esteem in which it was held at that time goes largely to his credit. As Pr...

During the 1980s and 1990s Asian 'developmental states' attracted much attention in political science and economics literature, but the role of law in the economic development was neglected. It was only after the Asian crisis of 1997 that many analysts began to focus on a lack of regulation and transparency as a major factor triggering the crisis. The crucial questions now are how successful the current reforms will be, and which features of the Asian approach to commercial law will be resistant to reform pressures. This book examines the prospects for commercial law reform in Asia, giving particular attention to Japan and Singapore, as frequently cited role models for Asian developmentalism, and also examining development related business laws in countries such as China, Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and the Philippines.

From Xenakis's UPIC to Graphic Notation Today

From Xenakis's UPIC to Graphic Notation Today sheds light on the revolutionary UPIC system, developed by composer Iannis Xenakis in the late 1970s. This digital innovation enables the transformation of drawings into musical compositions and continues to shape the world of contemporary music notation. Freely available in open access, this book provides unrestricted access to the historical origins of UPIC and its evolution into modern notation techniques. Richly illustrated, it reveals the unique fusion of image and sound. Through QR codes, readers can experience the compositions interactively. IANNES XENAKIS (1922–2001) was not only a composer but also a visionary and a bridge-builder between music, mathematics, and architecture. Originally trained as an engineer in Athens, he developed innovative compositional techniques that integrate geometric and mathematical principles with music. His creation of the UPIC system established him as a pioneer of computer-assisted music, with an influence that extends into today's musical landscape. Often described as a "sound architect," Xenakis's unique approach and interdisciplinary works remain groundbreaking.

Rosalie Gascoigne (1917–1999) was a highly regarded Australian artist whose assemblages of found materials embraced landscape, still life, minimalism, arte povera and installations. She was 57 when she had her first exhibition. Behind this late coming-out lay a long and unusual preparation in looking at nature for its aesthetic qualities, collecting found objects, making flower arrangements and practising ikebana. Her art found an appreciative audience from the start. She was a people person, and it pleased her that through her exhibiting career of 25 years, her works were acquired by people of all ages, interests and backgrounds, as well as by the major public institutions on both sides of the Tasman Sea.
