Young Researchers 2004
The selection of papers in this special issue of WEMS illustrates the various aspects of water and wastewater treatment and management. These papers were presented at the 2nd Young Researchers Conference held on 23-24 April 2004, at the University of Wageningen, The Netherlands. It was organised on behalf of the International Water Association (IWA) and supported by the European Symposium of Environmental Biotechnology (ESEB 2000). The IWA Young Researcher Conferences' mission is to provide young researchers in water and wastewater science, technology and management with a forum to discuss current and future environmental concerns. The conferences aim to confront environmental researchers with technologists and regulatory instances dealing with environmental quality. Moreover, the IWA Young Researchers Conferences address issues related to the development of careers in the water sector.
Navigating the TMDL Process
Narrative water quality criteria are an integral component of States water quality standards but they pose special problems when incorporated into the TMDL process. The TMDL process is typically a quantitative activity, defining numeric allowable loads necessary to meet a numeric water quality objective. Narrative criteria confound development of quantitative TMDLs, due to the absence of these numeric criteria. The objective of this research was to improve the methods for addressing narrative water quality criteria in the TMDL process. The problems associated with narrative criteria in the TMDL process are known in general terms but, prior to this research, there has not been a thorough review of the use of narrative criteria in TMDLs nor broad guidance on how to address narrative criteria in the TMDL process. The approach taken for this research was to define the range of problems associated with all types of narrative criteria by means of a comprehensive review of 120 narrative TMDLs, and provide guiding principles to help address these problems.
War Reporting and Justice
This book explores how journalists understand and interpret justice in their coverage of wars. Its deep analysis of war reporting offers a new understanding of modern, multicultural societies in times of conflict. In particular, it explores how the Yugoslav conflicts of the 1990s gave birth to the modern notion of the transnational community. The text provides new theoretical concepts in order to better understand media work during times of war, and offers new definitions of conflict and the transnational community as an authority of normative criteria for justice. Furthermore, it details a new model for the analysis of media texts with step-by-step guidelines and examples that will be very useful for media educators, journalism teachers, and students of journalism. The book’s novel approach to understanding justice during a times of conflict will also be valuable for journalists who cover armed conflicts.
